SUMMARY:Clothing Swap at STITCH AND DESTROY
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to donate your clothing to STITCH AND DESTROY? Now you can at our monthly Clothing Swaps! Bring your unwanted clothing and textiles- wearable or not- and take home something new. Any clothing and textiles left over from the swap will be used to create our upcycled fashions. Our monthly Clothing Swaps will take place every last Saturday of the month unless otherwise stated. \nWhy a clothing swap? We want to keep as much textile waste out of the landfill as possible\, but first we want this clothing to be worn by our community. While our upcycled garments are made only from textile waste (and we save every scrap)\, the most sustainable garment is what’s already in your (or someone else’s) closet. Plus\, we only have so much storage space 🙂 \nBring a maximum of 20 garments or textiles to STITCH AND DESTROY at any time during the Clothing Swap hours (noon-5pm)\, and take home as many garments from the swap as you’d like! There will be clothing that is damaged/unwearable so if you upcycle too\, this swap is also for you! You do not have to bring clothing to take clothing and vice-versa. This is a FREE event. RSVP ticket not required. Any items brought to the swap and not taken during the event are considered donated to STITCH AND DESTROY. SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religion movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://freelibrary-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cNQ2q3fvQ4CqWBN9IgeFXw#/registration

SUMMARY:(In)visible Structures: Rebecca Rutstein Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of (In)visible Structures\, a solo exhibition of paintings by Rebecca Rutstein. Enjoy a talk in the gallery by Rebecca Rutstein at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served.\nThis event is free and open to the public. Sign up at the link below for event updates. Walk-ins welcome!\n \nSign Up\n \nAbout (In)visible Structures\n(In)visible Structures is a solo exhibition of paintings by Rebecca Rutstein. Working at the intersection of art and science\, Rutstein’s artistic practice visualizes environmental processes that connect and sustain all life on earth despite being invisible to the naked eye. This exhibition draws from Rutstein’s established body of works inspired by oceanic voyages with scientists\, presenting her Kama’ehuakanaloa Series painted at sea during an expedition off the coast of Hawaii in 2023. Rutstein also presents two new paintings signaling her current artistic explorations: Brine Forest (2025) is a mesmerizing composition based on Rutstein’s artistic research with scientists studying the microscopic activity within salt channels in Arctic sea ice. Shape Shifter (2025) pulsates with a network of interconnected abstract patterns inspired by underground fungal networks that enable trees to communicate and are integral to the forest ecosystem. Rutstein’s works inspire contemplation and awe while also fostering knowledge and respect for the hidden processes at work in the natural world.\n(In)visible Structures is curated by Heather Moqtaderi\, Interim Director of Environmental Art\nWorks on view in this exhibition are Courtesy of the Bridgette Mayer Gallery

SUMMARY:Clinic Cleaners
DESCRIPTION:Clinic Cleaners are volunteers who help us maintain a neat and tidy space for our patients at the Wildlife Clinic.\nWildlife rehabilitation can be messy work\, and volunteers foster a healthy environment by assisting with laundry\, sweeping floors\, and cleaning the lobby. This allows our expert staff to focus more time on caring for the thousands of animals that the Wildlife Clinic cares for every year.\nRegister Now\nCleaning materials and personal protective equipment\, such as gloves and masks\, are provided. Volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty (yes\, that includes animal waste) and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Clinic Cleaners will not be working directly with animals or have access to patient areas. Clinic Cleaners must be at least 18 years old to sign up. Due to limited space\, we are unable to accept walk-ins.\nCan’t make this date but want to attend an upcoming event? Fill out our volunteer application and we’ll let you know about upcoming volunteer opportunities here at the Schuylkill Center!
