DESCRIPTION:The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and William Way invite you to celebrate National Coming Out Day with a guided hike and an outdoor open mic on Saturday\, October 10th from 12-3pm. \nLed by an inspiring environmental educator\, this guided hike will focus on the scientific exploration of queerness and gender fluidity in nature. The hike will be about an hour long on the trails at the Schuylkill Center. Weather conditions can impact trail conditions\, which are sometimes narrow or rocky. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable\, weather appropriate clothing. There is free onsite parking and restrooms at the Schuylkill Center.\nThe guided hike will then be followed by light refreshments and an open mic at the outdoor amphitheater\, hosted by Mary Groce. This open mic is an opportunity for participants to present on “Coming Out in Nature” – sharing coming out stories\, performing a song\, reciting a poem\, whatever they like! \nThis event is free to attend. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Natasha Guy for a workshop that will use collage as a way to explore historical images. \n2026 marks not just the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, but also the 200th anniversary of photography. In honor of these celebrations\, participants will use historical images from the Print and Picture Collection to compose a collage and discuss what they’ve made as a group\, exploring topics like how a city pictures itself\, how photographs build collective memory\, and the ways that history can be reopened through collage. The workshop will be held in the Art Department at Parkway Central Library and will run from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Russell Brodie- Paintings 2001–2026
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Elizabeth Spungen\, Tarver\, Bullock and Burton will reflect on their lifelong journeys shaped by Black cowboy culture\, their commitment to preserving its vital cultural history\, and how they have come together for The Long Ride Home project. \nRon Tarver was a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer for more than 30 years\, where he received a Pulitzer Prize and numerous other awards. Tarver has also been awarded Guggenheim Foundation\, Independence Foundation\, NEA and Pew Fellowships. His work has been widely exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally and is included in many public collections. \nJordan Bullock is a Philadelphia-based racehorse trainer whose work is rooted in the city’s tradition of Black urban horsemanship. Raised in North Philadelphia\, he grew up as part of the White House Stables in Brewerytown\, where his father\, George “Bumpsey” Bullock\, was a central figure. Bullock gained attention as a young subject of Ron Tarver’s series about Philadelphia’s Black cowboys in the early 1990s. Today\, he trains at Parx Racetrack\, continuing a lifelong dedication shaped by family\, community and enduring cultural traditions. \nArt T. Burton spent 40 years in higher education as both a Professor of History and an administrator in African American Student Affairs. Burton is an award-winning author who published the first books on African American and Native American outlaws and lawmen in the Wild West\, as well as African Americans soldiers. His most recent work\, Cherokee Bill: Black Cowboy\, Indian Outlaw\, was published in 2020. In addition to receiving numerous recognitions\, Burton has appeared in documentaries and shows on the History Channel\, FOX and AHC. He was recently named the Historian for the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum of Fort Worth\, TX.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026 at 2 PM in the Art Department for a talk by Philadelphia artist Cavin Jones. \nCavin Jones is a painter\, muralist\, and collagist whose figurative work is inspired by American history\, particularly the African American experience. Jones has said that his work is “a catalyst to stimulate thought and promote discussion about various issues prevalent in society.” His dynamic compositions often feature contrasting elements that as he says\, “infuse the paintings with layers of meaning and associations.” \nCavin will talk about his art journey\, including his public mural work. After the talk in the Art Department\, we’ll visit the Print and Picture Collection to view the original drawings for Cavin’s reimagined Alice in Wonderland. Cavin will have copies of his books available for purchase.

Ride a swan boat\, see exotic birds up close\, tour a historic ship\, and enjoy great views of the river from a ferry boat. \nJoin us from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia and Wiggins Park in Camden for exciting activities\, engaging exhibits\, and plenty of opportunities to connect with the majestic Delaware River. \nThe river is at the heart of the festival\, so we’ll have free water-based interactive activities throughout the day\, including swan boat rides from Wheel Fun Rentals. This is a great opportunity for those who are looking to learn more about plant identification and restoration techniques while connecting with nature and other members of your community. Together\, we will work to remove invasive plant species and improve our trails.\nWorkday Details\nNo experience necessary to volunteer. Training will be provided by our expert staff during the workday. We recommend wearing long pants\, sturdy boots or shoes. We will have a selection of gloves if needed but volunteers are welcome to bring their own if they have a favorite pair. We will provide tools for our volunteers. DESCRIPTION:August 24 – October 17\, 2026\nRUMOCA at 301 High Street\nIntersections of Art and Science: Communication and Collaboration\nSeptember 16th\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM with reception to follow \nIn collaboration with the Arctic Radium Isotope Observing Network (ARION) research project led by Rowan Associate Professor Dr. Lauren E. Kipp\, with Dr. Matt Charette and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution\, Diane Burko: Extraction\, A Dialogue of Extremes is the community engagement component of the National Science Foundation grant that has funded the research. \nPulling from scientific drawings and maps provided by the research team\, artist Diane Burko has depicted in her paintings the chemical changes and flow of elements recorded in the Arctic. Rendered as markings and data-like graphs\, these flows circulate within and around recurring spherical forms that anchor the paintings. The compositions feel distant and restrained\, their cool detachment echoing the region’s vast isolation\, yet they remain quietly captivating\, amplifying the Arctic’s environmental extremities. \nIn contrast\, a second body of work responds to the corporate mining industry and deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. Here\, the sphere reappears\, interchanging perspectives by encasing sites of extraction\, or amplifying the indigenous areas that have been impacted. Fragments of charred bark protrude from the surface of these paintings\, focusing attention on these locations as if viewed under a microscope. Unlike the Arctic works\, these paintings are intimate but foreboding and unavoidably dominant.

DESCRIPTION:Jade Chloe” is a self entitled performance which is part of the all media arts festival known as the Philly Fringe. It is a celebration of self expression and self determination. This performance has a total runtime of thirty minutes and encompasses a brilliant cast of dancers who strengthen viewer’s understanding in addition to sharing a new perspective on empathy\,individuality\, and artistry.\nJade Chloe is an emerging artist whom currently trains through Philadelphia Ballet’s new Contemporary Division. She is formerly a graduate of Alvin Ailey’s high school program in collaboration with Professional Performing Arts School. At the Alvin Ailey school\, she studied ballet\, jazz\, and modern techniques such as graham and horton. Jade additionally trained at Steps on Broadway Academy after my afternoons at Alvin Ailey. During Jade Chloe’s junior year of highschool she pursued choreography through Dance Lab New York’s next gen Apprenticeship in the Spring of 2024. In addition to dance\, Jade is pursuing academic studies at Temple University where she will be a sophomore in the Fall of 2026.\nHer performance is heavily informed by her training at the School of Philadelphia Ballet. The show itself encompasses contemporary\, ballet\, jazz\, and modern influences and takes you on the journey of Jade’s life for the past year along with the soundtrack of that time.

DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Frankford is pleased to announce that it will host Camp Dreams\, an exhibition of art created by young people\, sponsored by Unique Dreams\, Inc\, on Friday\, August 28\, 2026 at 6:30 PM. \nUnique Dreams\, Inc. is a social service non-profit headquartered in Frankford. Its mission is to anchor in change\, empower and strengthen youth and families by providing educational enrichment\, therapeutic services\, recreational programs ​and activities in a phased-in model approach to assure efficacy\, while engaging the community with initiatives that will effectively meet the needs of the individuals that it serves. Youth participating in their summer program created the art that will be displayed. \nThe Historical Society is partnering with Unique Dreams to provide a venue for their special events. The exhibit will be displayed in the HSF Auditorium at 1507 Orthodox St.\, Philadelphia. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public. Both on street parking and free\, off street parking across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School will be available.
