SUMMARY:Final Philly Unwrapped Community Engagement Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the sixth and final session of Philly Unwrapped\, a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Over the past year\, this series has brought together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. This session is proudly co-hosted with the Eastwick Friends and Neighbors Coalition (EFNC)\, an Environmental Justice community organization in Southwest Philadelphia’s Eastwick neighborhood\, a traditionally underserved community low-lying\, predominantly minority area built on former marshland at the confluence of Darby and Cobbs Creeks\, where climate change is worsening already-severe flood risk (First Street Foundation estimates roughly 1\,536 properties face major flood risk over the next 30 years). For over a decade\, the coalition’s President Earl Wilson and Vice President Ramona Rousseau Reid of Eastwick Friends & Neighbors Coalition have led environmental justice work there\, with the collaboration of major supporting environmental groups\, multiple residents stopping a proposed apartment housing development consisting of 722 unit apartment complex\, 1\,043 parking spaces on 35 acres of land near 86th Street & Lindbergh Blvd. adjacent to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. The site was zoned for single-family homes and included areas designated by FEMA as a Special Flood Hazard Area\, making it highly vulnerable to flooding in the Eastwick community along Darby Creek that would have worsened flooding for existing homes. In addition\, the Eastwick community\, and historic organizing that forced the closure of the Clearview Landfill in 1973 and pushed for EPA testing of toxins on the site a concern made urgent by nearby industrial land\, including the former largest oil refinery on the Eastern Seaboard\, since floodwaters can carry contaminants into residential areas. More recently\, the city and FEMA have directed resilience funding toward the neighborhood\, including a $2M+ FEMA grant.\nThis session is split into two parts. First\, we’ll walk through how to get the most out of the Philly Unwrapped Toolkit\, a free resource built to help businesses reduce single-use packaging\, cut costs\, and build stronger community trust. Then Trash Academy will lead a community SWOC session\, an open discussion on the strengths\, weaknesses\, opportunities\, and challenges of reuse and waste reduction efforts across Philadelphia.\nIf you’re in the food\, beverage\, event\, or hospitality sector\, or you support these industries through a CDC\, neighborhood association\, represent a city agency or office or community-based organization\, or concerned citizen\, this session is for you\, whether you’ve been with us since the launch or are just getting involved\, your voice is critical and we welcome you.\nPhilly Unwrapped is managed by ECHO Systems and funded by the Region 3 EPA Thriving Communities Green and Healthy Home Initiative\, in partnership with SBN\, ReThink Disposable/Clean Water Fund & Trash Academy. SUMMARY:Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Philly Unwrapped is a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Our work is focused on reducing single-use waste\, protecting public health\, and creating the conditions for reuse to become standard practice across our city’s businesses\, institutions\, and communities. \nWe invite you to join us for our next in-person session\, hosted in partnership with Germantown United CDC at Our House Culture Center on Germantown Avenue. This session is part of a six-part series that includes both virtual and in-person convening each one an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding\, strengthen partnerships\, and move this work forward together. \nFood will be provided and Spanish interpretation will be available. Space is limited to 30 seats\, so please register early and plan to arrive on time. \nThis session will focus on two areas: \nFirst\, we will examine the business case for reuse. Participants will share real examples of organizations transitioning away from single-use packaging and serviceware\, including the financial savings\, operational considerations\, and the impact on customer health and community trust.\nSecond\, Trash Academy will lead a community engagement session where participants are invited to share their own questions\, barriers\, and considerations around reuse adoption. This is an important part of our process. Building a system that works for Philadelphia requires honest input from the organizations and communities who will be part of it.\nWe are asking food and beverage businesses\, city agencies\, NGOs\, BIDs\, neighborhood associations\, and concerned residents to register\, attend\, and stay engaged. With the addition of this partnership\, Ray’s Reusables will evolve beyond just sustainable retail into an all-in-one eco-hub. The launch event will include: \n\n\n\n\nLaunch of the community compost drop-off program \n\n\nA free gift of house made mini soap bar with purchase for the first 30 customers \n\n\nPop ups by local vendors with connections to the shop or waste reduction \n\n\n(10-2 pm) KC Co – KC Co. makes bold\, joy-filled accessories for anyone who likes their style a little fun or funky. Think bold and earthy colors\, unexpected combinations\, geometric forms\, and thoughtful details—all influenced by a background in graphic design. Each piece is intentional and slow-made in small batches right here in NoLibs. Our connection: The owner\, Kim\, is one of the shop’s earliest customers! \n\n\n(1-4 pm) Juicebox Workshop – Using salvaged textiles\, found objects\, pigments and thread\, artist Julie Woodard creates impressionistic landscapes\, multimedia installations\, functional sculptures\, and wearable pieces that convey her passion for nature\, memory\, and creative reuse. Our connection: Julie and Ray met vending years ago! You can spot Ray in one of Julie’s pieces of wearable art (a beloved cap) often.\n\n\n(12pm-sellout) 30 Percent Patisserie– A play on the common bubble tea question “how sweet would you like it? 100%\, 50%\, 30%”\, 30 Percent Patisserie believes that when desserts are too sweet\, you lose the ability to appreciate the true flavors of the ingredients. Trained in pastry in Japan\, Hsin-Hui creates sweets representing the ‘less sweet’ philosophy from bubble tea shops. Our connection: Hsin-Hui often recycles flexible plastic bags from the baking process during our flexible plastics week.
