DESCRIPTION:Fire Through Dry Grass by Andres “Jay” Molina and Alexis Neophytides \n(USA\, 2023\, 89 min) \nAs COVID-19 raged through nursing homes\, a group of Black and brown disabled artists decided to document in real time the harrowing experience of residents inside the Coler Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center. Co-directors Alexis Neophytides and Andres “Jay” Molina uncover a history of institutional neglect and abandonment\, where Jay lives along with his fellow Reality Poets\, a group of residents mostly gun violence survivors. Wearing snapback caps and Air Jordans\, Jay and the other Reality Poets don’t look like typical nursing home residents. They used to travel around the city sharing their art and hard-earned wisdom with youth. Now\, using GoPros clamped to their wheelchairs\, they document their experiences on “lockdown.” \nAlexis Neophytides is a documentary filmmaker and educator whose work centers around community and how we find meaning in people and place. She is the co-creator\, co-director\, and producer of Neighborhood Slice\, a public television documentary series that tells the stories of longtime New Yorkers who’ve held onto their little corner of the city despite fast-growing gentrification. Over the past decade\, she has developed filmmaking programs and taught students of all ages throughout NYC. Prichett\, creator of this year’s large-scale participatory art project\, The Big Sloth.Many of you volunteered by helping to hand-string the disposable cutlery that became part of the installation. Now\, artist Pam Prichett will take you behind the scenes and share what has unfolded over the past ten months in her South Bronx studio\, offering insight into the creative process that brought The Big Sloth to life. \nArtwork by RISD alum and native New Yorker\, Pamela Prichett has been featured in The Provincetown Fine Arts Museum; Museum of the City of New York; and the i.d.e.a. Museum\, Mesa\, AZ. She has had solo shows of her paintings in New York City and Philadelphia. Her work has also appeared in publications including The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and Los Angeles Times. DESCRIPTION:You Don’t Have to Go Home\, But . . .by Aidan Un (USA\, 2024\, 78 min) is an ode to dancing bodies\, a grimy love letter to Philly\, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song\, the club’s lights come on\, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives\, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop\, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free. \nThe evening will also feature the next generation of storytellers\, opening with “Hop Hop Life”\, produced through Scribe’s Documentary History Project for Youth (DHPY). The event will also feature appearances by Second Sundae dancers who helped shape the scene\, joining Un for a post-screening discussion about the community\, history\, and influence of hip-hop culture.
