SUMMARY:Design A Doodad: Travel Game Zine
DESCRIPTION:BARRIO TELEVISION (work in progress) by Christina DiPasquale\n(USA\, 2026\, TBD) \nBARRIO TELEVISION uncovers the story of Puerto Rican activists who produced the first bilingual Latino television series to air nationwide called “Realidades.” After tracing U.S. complicity in the 1973 coup in Chile\, “Realidades” received backlash and the Nixon administration moved to cut public-media funding\, knocking the show off the air. Undeterred\, the creators mounted a comeback—training media makers in Philadelphia\, organizing a media coalition\, and sparking a fight for media power that continues to this day. \nChristina DiPasquale is a Colombian-American storyteller based in Philadelphia dedicated to advancing participatory media practices rooted in collective memory and movement-building.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Frankford April Meeting and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Frankford (HSF) today announced that Roger Turner\, curator of instruments and artifacts at the Science History Institute of Philadelphia\, will speak at its monthly meeting on April 14\, 2026 at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM. His topic will be “Weird\, Wonderful\, Playful and Profound: Treasures of the Science History Institute”. The venue is the HSF library/museum\, located at 1507 Orthodox St\, Philadelphia. The event is free and open to the public\, and parking is available across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture. \nThe Science History Institute is a free museum in Old City Philadelphia with some fascinating stuff. This talk explores surprising stories behind a few remarkable things from the collections. Why did Beatrix Potter draw mice around a Bunsen burner dreaming of toasted cheese? What can we learn about the history of plastic from a washed-up Lego dragon\, an ESPN producer’s vuvuzela\, and a song by Shel Silverstein? Added together\, these stories illustrate some of the ways that science and technology have created the world we live in today. \nRoger Turner is the curator of instruments and artifacts at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia\, USA. He studies the role of science in our daily lives\, from chemistry labs to pollution control to weather forecasting. Among his recent exhibits are “How to Read a Plastic Bag\,” and “Astroturf: Field of Contention.” His favorite scientific instrument is a spectrometer that has a label warning users about its “emotional crisis detector”.

SUMMARY:Help Preserve the Nation's History-One Document at a Time! at Parkway Central Library
DESCRIPTION:Discover how you can help deepen our understanding of American history by transcribing original post–Civil War documents. Your work will uncover stories of family\, resilience\, and community in the years following Emancipation.\nIn this Acts of Science: Connected program\, Smithsonian experts will introduce the Freedmen’s Bureau records\, explain their significance\, and share why your participation matters. Together\, we’ll explore how these documents illuminate the lives of formerly enslaved people during Reconstruction and why preserving them is vital for research and education. \nThis nationwide effort—led by the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, the Smithsonian Transcription Center\, and the Free Library of Philadelphia—aims to transcribe more than 1.7 million images\, making this the largest crowdsourcing project in Smithsonian history. \nThe event will be livestreamed via Zoom. Participants will follow along in real time while completing transcription activities on their own devices. \nJoin us in preserving the nation’s history—one document at a time! Click here for more information about the program series. \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE HELD IN THE HEIM CENTER\, FIRST FLOOR\, ROOM 131/132
