DESCRIPTION:\, \n \n \n\nBrook trout\, Schuylkill Highlands\, Pennsylvania. Photo: Jeremy Monroe\, Freshwaters Illustrated\nQualified Professionals Invited to Take the SFS Pilot Exam This Spring and Get Certified\nStroud Water Research Center is offering a pilot (beta) test of the Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) Fish Identification Certification exam and is seeking qualified professionals to participate this spring. \nThis certification recognizes advanced knowledge of regional fish species and supports high standards in fisheries and aquatic science. Through the Taxonomic Certification Program\, the Stroud Center works with SFS to strengthen scientific rigor by advancing certified taxonomic expertise. Accurate species identification underpins credible ecological data\, regulatory decisions\, and effective freshwater management. \nIndividuals who pass the beta exam will earn a two-year certification. \nBeta Exam Details\n\nStates covered: Maryland\, Pennsylvania\, West Virginia\, Delaware\, and Virginia\nExam format: 50 questions\nTime limit: 3 hours\nPassing score: 47 out of 50 (94%)\nSpecies study lists\n\nThis beta phase will allow the Stroud Center to validate exam delivery\, timing\, and question clarity while maintaining rigorous scientific standards. \nUpcoming Beta Exam Opportunities\n\n\n\n\nAFS Conference – PA Chapter Meeting\nBucknell UniversityMarch 13 at 9 a.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAMAAB Conference\nCacapon State Park\, Berkeley Springs\, WVMarch 24 at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSociety for Freshwater Science Annual MeetingSpokane\, WA\nMay 18 (time TBD) \n\n\n\n\nIn addition to this pilot fish certification\, the Stroud Center offers a full suite of established SFS certification exams. SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Intensive two-week course with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams. When: Course runs June 11–23\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on June 22.Where: Highlands Biological Station in Highlands\, North Carolina.\nDr. John Morse\, Clemson University\, and Dr. Matt Green\, NCDEQ\, will teach Southern Appalachian Mayflies\, Stoneflies\, and Caddisflies. The course includes the natural history and taxonomy of mayflies (Ephemeroptera)\, stoneflies (Plecoptera)\, and caddisflies (Trichoptera)\, including systematics\, ecology\, and behavior of larvae and adults\, with emphasis on those aspects important in ecological studies\, biological monitoring of water quality\, and sport fishing. Students will collect insects from mountain stream habitats and identify them in the laboratory.\nPrerequisites: Students should have prior training in zoology\, but not necessarily entomology.\nStudents may opt to take the Society for Freshwater Science’s Taxonomic Certification exam of eastern EPT to genus at the end of the course.\nInformation and Registration\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*. For more information\, visit the Schedule an Exam page.\n* This link may be blocked by some firewalls. If you cannot reach it\, please email tcp@stroudcenter.org to register.

SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams. When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753.\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists.\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. This workshop series will introduce participants to the ecology and taxonomy of aquatic insects.\nLevel 2 workshop is geared to environmental professionals:\nLocal\, state\, and federal aquatic ecologists; interagency review teams.\nBiologists with environmental consulting firms.\nFaculty and students with aquatic emphasis.\nManagers with citizen science programs.\nInformation and Registration\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*. For more information\, visit the Schedule an Exam page.\n* This link may be blocked by some firewalls. If you cannot reach it\, please email tcp@stroudcenter.org to register.
