SUMMARY:Adopt-a-Tree Tree Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. \nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife\, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nRegistration is required as spaces are limited. This event is open to all ages. Please bring your own water and work gloves to the event. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

SUMMARY:Five Trails\, One Hike: The Original Redux\, with Debra Brackett\, Jean McWilliams\, and Sue Amon
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Marian Racette\nMeet at the Courtesy Stables Trailhead Kiosk\nInspired by the 2023 All Trails Challenge\, we created an “abridged” all-trails loop walk that includes five major trails in the Wissahickon. This route became the first of a Five Trails\, One Hike series. It was a great hike in Spring of 2024 and we’re excited to revisit it this fall. We’ll start and finish at the kiosk at Courtesy Stables on Cathedral Road\, and enjoy the variety of vistas from both sides of the creek. Along the way\, we’ll observe points of natural and historic interest\, as well as ongoing water management projects. This rigorous route includes some steep and rocky ascents and descents and is about 4-4.5 miles long. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please.\nDistance: 4.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. SUMMARY:Halloween Hike to the Lost Cave of the Wissahickon with Kris Soffa and Patty Davis
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at the Hermitage Mansion\nJoin the Wild Women of the Wissahickon on this Twilight adventure to “The Lost Cave” of America’s first doomsday cult\, in the Hermit’s Glen. As Halloween approaches\, the veil thins\, and spirits cut loose and roam through the woods. Is it the End of The World? Will the Wizard Kelpius return to his cave to fulfill his prophecy?\nCostumes\, which will serve as disguises to confuse the nefarious ghouls\, are highly suggested. Come prepared to walk over uneven terrain in the failing light of the gloaming. Bring a camera to see if you can catch the likenesses of any apparitions on film!\nThis hike is appropriate for ages 18 and up.\nIf you want to read up a bit on your history before the hike\, check out Kris’s article on Kelpius and his cave here!\nDistance: 1 mile\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery.
