SUMMARY:Full Circle: Truth\, Healing\, and Indigenous Futures by Design
DESCRIPTION:The Jim Thorpe Center for the Futures of Native Peoples is now rising on Dickinson College’s campus in Carlisle\, about a mile from the former Carlisle Indian Industrial School. For nearly forty years\, that school used architecture\, regimentation\, and schooling as instruments of assimilation\, bringing Indigenous children from more than 140 Tribal Nations to Carlisle and working to strip away their languages\, names\, and cultures. This project turns that legacy around. At a moment when painful histories are easily contested or erased\, the Jim Thorpe Center is designed so that history can be relearned\, healing can take root in Native communities\, and learning can open to students and the public. \nThe two-story building brings together\, under one roof\, an art gallery devoted to Native and Indigenous artists\, including the Samuel G. Rose ’58 collection\, alongside classrooms\, a storytelling and recording space\, offices\, and gathering and ceremonial spaces for Tribal Nations\, students\, scholars\, and the public. Its form draws on Indigenous building traditions\, from a welcome gallery shaped by the tipi to a light-filled hall shaped by the longhouse\, and orients itself to the cardinal directions and the surrounding gardens. \nA moderated panel asks how design can move from erasure to remembrance and from harm to healing. Hear from Richard Olaya\, Principal of O Z Collaborative\, and the project team. Guests will learn how the Center came to be and the history it responds to\, how its galleries\, classrooms\, and learning spaces are designed to support truth-telling\, healing\, and Indigenous futures\, and how Indigenous principles and a close relationship to nature shaped the architecture.

DESCRIPTION:Join artist Natasha Guy for a workshop that will use collage as a way to explore historical images. \n2026 marks not just the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, but also the 200th anniversary of photography. DESCRIPTION:BARRIO TELEVISION (work in progress) by Christina DiPasquale\n(USA\, 2026\, TBD) \nBARRIO TELEVISION uncovers the story of Puerto Rican activists who produced the first bilingual Latino television series to air nationwide called “Realidades.” After tracing U.S. complicity in the 1973 coup in Chile\, “Realidades” received backlash and the Nixon administration moved to cut public-media funding\, knocking the show off the air. Undeterred\, the creators mounted a comeback—training media makers in Philadelphia\, organizing a media coalition\, and sparking a fight for media power that continues to this day. \nChristina DiPasquale is a Colombian-American storyteller based in Philadelphia dedicated to advancing participatory media practices rooted in collective memory and movement-building.

Each panelist brings a different but overlapping expertise to the topic (forest\, meadows and edge habitats\, watersheds)\, and a shared passion for the health and resilience of the flora and fauna of our Mid-Atlantic region. \nYou will be invited to share knowledge\, build community\, and learn from real-world case studies—highlighting both successes and setbacks. Powers will discuss these prints\, inspired by the cantos of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno\, with artist Jane Irish and master printer Cindi Ettinger. \nWith symbolic imagery and hand-worked surfaces\, Powers creates powerful landscapes that traverse the circles of sin\, inviting viewers into a timeless journey through human fragility\, its consequences and the hope of redemption. \nThis program is presented in conjunction with “Dante in Philadelphia\,” an exhibition of six monumental relief prints by Tom Powers\, presented in two venues during the month of November: Garden Loom J Irish Studio (737 N. 2nd Street) and C.R. Routes offered from 21 to 101 miles through Philadelphia\, Montgomery\, and Chester Counties. The event\, organized by the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP)\, will be held on Sunday\, September 7\, 2025. \nThe fully supported ride starts and finishes at AIM Academy (1200 River Road\, Conshohocken)\, located directly on the Schuylkill River Trail across from the SEPTA Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Miquon Station. \nRegistration begins at 6am. Rolloffs commence at 7am or slightly later at the choice of the riders. \nEvent Highlights\n• Seven routes to choose from: three mostly flat\, paved trail routes for casual riders; four longer\, more challenging road routes for experienced cyclists.\n• Rest stops at AIM Academy\, Lloyd Hall (No. 1 Boathouse Row)\, the Phoenixville YMCA\, and Ridge Fire Company in Spring City\, Chester County.\n• Coffee\, bagels\, and fresh fruit at the start; fresh fruit and homemade baked goods at all rest stops; a celebratory pizza party at the finish.\n• On-course support: SAG drivers patrolling the routes and marshals stationed at key locations.\n• Scenic highlights include:\n• Main Street Manayunk\, West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Arboretum\, MLK Drive\, Fairmount Park mansions\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and six Schuylkill River crossings—including the Manayunk Viaduct and Strawberry Mansion Bridge.\n• Some of the most picturesque stretches of the Schuylkill River between Philadelphia and Phoenixville.\n• Valley Forge National Historical Park\, four historic covered bridges\, and Chester County’s scenic horse country with rolling hills above Phoenixville. \nRain or shine.
