SUMMARY:Earth Appreciation Day - Plants and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Temple University at the Discovery Center as we work to maintain our habitats and conservation work for Earth Day! This site is home to over 170+ species of birds\, many species of insects and mammals\, and up to thousands of visitors per year. Our efforts can aid in the livelihood of these animals and stewardship for the people. We’ll focus on removing invasive bushes and plants around the trailhead so we can plant native shrubs in the future\, as well as fill our seed packets for the public seed library. \nAfterwards\, we open our space to an open stage for those to come and share their voice and appreciation of our earth and community. This can be through poetry\, stories and other types of offerings. SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Freshwater Mussels!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. For February 7th\, we are joined by Fairmount Water Works and will take a look at our freshwater mussels that are nursing in the lake. We will learn how to measure them for data\, and conclude with sampling the water to view and identify our microscopic organisms. We’ll also have materials for optional watercolor painting with lake water. RSVP down below to secure your spot. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! SUMMARY:Earth Day at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Help celebrate nature and protect the environment with our Earth Day volunteer event! \nEach year\, we bring together diverse volunteers from the community\, including individuals\, families\, scout troops\, and youth groups\, to work on projects that improve habitat for wildlife\, protect important natural resources\, and preserve the park’s plant and animal communities. Past projects have included planting trees\, installing bird boxes\, and stream cleanups. \nWe will meet to plant trees\, remove invasive plant species\, repair trails\, and improve habitat for wetland wildlife. Groups will be scheduled for 3 hour shifts (9am-12pm or 1-4pm). \nRegister for a shift by emailing jshahan@newlingristmill.org.
