DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia Sculptors\, in partnership with Women for Greater Philadelphia\, announces the outdoor sculpture exhibition TIMELINE at historic Laurel Hill Mansion in East Fairmount Park. The show opens with a free public reception on Friday\, July 18\, 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nTIMELINE is a dynamic group exhibit that offers a wide-ranging look at the Laurel Hill site and its layered history along the Schuylkill River. Artists\, selected by jurors Nancy Agati and Rachel Zimmerman\, proposed works that respond to the complex timeline of the property\, the mansion itself\, and the many individuals who have lived on\, cared for\, and shaped the land. Laurel Hill Mansion sits on lands that were inhabited for millennia by the Lenni Lenape. \nThe land was acquired by William Penn in 1682\, and the mansion\, built in 1767\, has undergone numerous changes in structure\, ownership\, and use\, from the colonial era to the present. With a focus on the past\, several works in the exhibition address aspects of women’s rights to property\, labor and farming\, trade and commerce\, slavery\, and the abolitionist movement. Artists have engaged with broader themes\, creating works that integrate and connect contemporary viewpoints with historical concepts\, including the passage of time\, displacement\, resilience\, stewardship\, and our human relationship to the land. \nThe property is currently managed by the nonprofit organization Women for Greater Philadelphia. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to donate your clothing to STITCH AND DESTROY? Now you can at our monthly Clothing Swaps! Bring your unwanted clothing and textiles- wearable or not- and take home something new. Any clothing and textiles left over from the swap will be used to create our upcycled fashions. Our monthly Clothing Swaps will take place every last Saturday of the month unless otherwise stated. \nWhy a clothing swap? We want to keep as much textile waste out of the landfill as possible\, but first we want this clothing to be worn by our community. While our upcycled garments are made only from textile waste (and we save every scrap)\, the most sustainable garment is what’s already in your (or someone else’s) closet. Plus\, we only have so much storage space 🙂 \nBring a maximum of 20 garments or textiles to STITCH AND DESTROY at any time during the Clothing Swap hours (noon-5pm)\, and take home as many garments from the swap as you’d like! There will be clothing that is damaged/unwearable so if you upcycle too\, this swap is also for you! You do not have to bring clothing to take clothing and vice-versa. This is a FREE event. RSVP ticket not required. Any items brought to the swap and not taken during the event are considered donated to STITCH AND DESTROY. Jenny is the author of Glorious Shade and The Ultimate Flower Gardener’s Guide. She and her home gardens have been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer\, the Wall Street Journal\, and on the PBS series The Victory Garden. She is the former senior director of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Meadowbrook Farm in Jenkintown and former director of the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University. \nBring lawn chairs or a blanket to enjoy this outdoor talk at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. Jenny will also lead a short “walk and talk” about native plants on the meeting grounds. Enjoy refreshments and conversation in the field as the fireflies come out.

The event\, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, will feature for sale the work of more than 20 artisans who create jewelry\, home décor\, ceramics\, fiber and apparel\, glass\, photography\, wood\, and many other hand-crafted items.\nThe festival also features a children’s craft and activity area that includes a children’s art center run by Cheltenham Center for the Arts. In addition to the children’s activities there is also a native plant sale and plenty of food\, beer\, refreshments and music.\nProceeds from Arts in the Park support the native plant restoration management of the four ecosystems in 11- acre High School Park.

SUMMARY:Joiri Minaya: Venus Flytrap
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar presents a site-specific\, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden\, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell\, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom\, extraction\, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden. \nMuch like a Venus flytrap\, the plant this project is named for\, Joiri Minaya’s practice often employs beauty before its bite\, utilizing sensuality\, lush florals and hues to invite deeper reflection on thornier aspects of history and the impacts of colonialism. For this project\, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series\, custom textile elements\, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram’s Garden. \nEstablished in 1728\, Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America\, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia’s history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for Indigenous trade to the role of founder John Bartram in popularizing Eurocentric notions of “modern botany\,” Bartram’s Garden can be understood as a microcosm for the ongoing colonial experiment. With Venus Flytrap\, Minaya extends her longrunning interest in foregrounding the histories and possibilities of local and Indigenous plant life. Together\, Minaya and Cassell seek to reveal hidden histories of labor and anti-colonial resistance buried in the grounds of Bartram’s Garden and historic Kingsessing\, and their echoes across the Americas.

Its research materials still include World Book Encyclopedias and a physical card catalog. There is no access to digital books\, electronic research materials\, periodicals\, and other critical technological resources to ensure that our students can excel and compete academically. Despite our school’s successes and strengths\, our students cannot effectively engage with their present education and prepare for life after graduation without a library and a technologically accessible resource center. \nThis fundraiser aims to restore the library to its former glory while incorporating modern resources to empower current and future students. We aim to provide a state-of-the-art library and resource center staffed with librarians so Girls’ High girls can thrive. However\, attendees who use mobility devices and caregivers may be dropped off at the event site before the driver parks in Ambler. The walk from parking in Ambler primarily takes place on a narrow\, natural trail and in grassy areas which may have roots\, rocks\, and/or mud. The walking surfaces are variable and participants can expect to walk 1.0 miles (0.5 miles to the Barn + 0.5 miles return trip). \nAt the Four Mills Barn there will be limited indoor and outdoor seating\, heating/air conditioning\, a water bottle refilling station\, and accessible all gender bathrooms on both floors. The first floor family restroom has a private changing table and there is a nearby private area that can be used as a lactation room. Learn about the lifecycle of the amphibians that live at the Preserve and see the tadpoles in action. This fun event is open to individuals and to families with children of all ages. \nGuests will explore the preserve and visit activity stations to learn all about frogs. Depending on the weather and other natural factors\, we may see a lot of tadpoles or none at all\, but there will be lots to enjoy at Riverbend. Guests are encouraged to visit at their own pace and stay as long as they wish. \nThis event is rain or shine so please dress for the weather! \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $10 per person. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to donate your clothing to STITCH AND DESTROY? Now you can at our monthly Clothing Swaps! Bring your unwanted clothing and textiles- wearable or not- and take home something new. Any clothing and textiles left over from the swap will be used to create our upcycled fashions. Our monthly Clothing Swaps will take place every last Saturday of the month unless otherwise stated. \nWhy a clothing swap? We want to keep as much textile waste out of the landfill as possible\, but first we want this clothing to be worn by our community. While our upcycled garments are made only from textile waste (and we save every scrap)\, the most sustainable garment is what’s already in your (or someone else’s) closet. Plus\, we only have so much storage space 🙂 \nBring a maximum of 20 garments or textiles to STITCH AND DESTROY at any time during the Clothing Swap hours (noon-5pm)\, and take home as many garments from the swap as you’d like! There will be clothing that is damaged/unwearable so if you upcycle too\, this swap is also for you! You do not have to bring clothing to take clothing and vice-versa. This is a FREE event. RSVP ticket not required. Any items brought to the swap and not taken during the event are considered donated to STITCH AND DESTROY.
