SUMMARY:Final Philly Unwrapped Community Engagement Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the sixth and final session of Philly Unwrapped\, a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Over the past year\, this series has brought together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. This session is proudly co-hosted with the Eastwick Friends and Neighbors Coalition (EFNC)\, an Environmental Justice community organization in Southwest Philadelphia’s Eastwick neighborhood\, a traditionally underserved community low-lying\, predominantly minority area built on former marshland at the confluence of Darby and Cobbs Creeks\, where climate change is worsening already-severe flood risk (First Street Foundation estimates roughly 1\,536 properties face major flood risk over the next 30 years). For over a decade\, the coalition’s President Earl Wilson and Vice President Ramona Rousseau Reid of Eastwick Friends & Neighbors Coalition have led environmental justice work there\, with the collaboration of major supporting environmental groups\, multiple residents stopping a proposed apartment housing development consisting of 722 unit apartment complex\, 1\,043 parking spaces on 35 acres of land near 86th Street & Lindbergh Blvd. adjacent to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. The site was zoned for single-family homes and included areas designated by FEMA as a Special Flood Hazard Area\, making it highly vulnerable to flooding in the Eastwick community along Darby Creek that would have worsened flooding for existing homes. In addition\, the Eastwick community\, and historic organizing that forced the closure of the Clearview Landfill in 1973 and pushed for EPA testing of toxins on the site a concern made urgent by nearby industrial land\, including the former largest oil refinery on the Eastern Seaboard\, since floodwaters can carry contaminants into residential areas. More recently\, the city and FEMA have directed resilience funding toward the neighborhood\, including a $2M+ FEMA grant.\nThis session is split into two parts. First\, we’ll walk through how to get the most out of the Philly Unwrapped Toolkit\, a free resource built to help businesses reduce single-use packaging\, cut costs\, and build stronger community trust. Then Trash Academy will lead a community SWOC session\, an open discussion on the strengths\, weaknesses\, opportunities\, and challenges of reuse and waste reduction efforts across Philadelphia.\nIf you’re in the food\, beverage\, event\, or hospitality sector\, or you support these industries through a CDC\, neighborhood association\, represent a city agency or office or community-based organization\, or concerned citizen\, this session is for you\, whether you’ve been with us since the launch or are just getting involved\, your voice is critical and we welcome you.\nPhilly Unwrapped is managed by ECHO Systems and funded by the Region 3 EPA Thriving Communities Green and Healthy Home Initiative\, in partnership with SBN\, ReThink Disposable/Clean Water Fund & Trash Academy. Its mission is to anchor in change\, empower and strengthen youth and families by providing educational enrichment\, therapeutic services\, recreational programs ​and activities in a phased-in model approach to assure efficacy\, while engaging the community with initiatives that will effectively meet the needs of the individuals that it serves. Youth participating in their summer program created the art that will be displayed. \nThe Historical Society is partnering with Unique Dreams to provide a venue for their special events. The exhibit will be displayed in the HSF Auditorium at 1507 Orthodox St.\, Philadelphia. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public. Both on street parking and free\, off street parking across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School will be available.

SUMMARY:Philly Stake
DESCRIPTION:Philly Stake is a microgranting event that supports creative\, community-engaged projects. Attendees enjoy a locally-sourced meal prepared by Stake volunteers and decide who receives the funding. \nPhilly Stake first brought Philadelphians together in 2010 and ran through 2016. Ten years later\, on the 250th anniversary of our country\, it’s back to celebrate the ingenuity and benevolence of our fine City! \nOver the years\, Philly Stake provided seed money to more than 16 community projects — many of which you may know and love today: the Monkey and the Elephant Café\, RAIR\, the West Philly Tool Library\, Warrior Writers\, and others. We hosted between 150 and 250 people at venues across the city\, from Bartram’s Garden to the First Unitarian Church basement to the Ukie Club. \nAs an all volunteer-run project\, proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the grantees\, to support the event costs and to help fund subsequent events.

This annual show returns on Saturday\, August 22\, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the lush Sculpture Courtyard for an evening celebrating living artists\, creativity\, and life together under a glowing night sky. \nFounded by Visual Artist and Event Curator Jona Shreeves-Taylor (@J.Taylor)\, this celebration was created from the belief that “artists deserve to receive their flowers while they’re alive to smell them\,” a sentiment reflected in the abundance of floral arrangements that adorn the space each year. Today\, this area is known as the Centennial District and is home to Highmark Mann. In 1976\, as the country celebrated its Bicentennial\, Highmark Mann was founded in West Fairmount Park. DESCRIPTION:Among the best-known buildings of Germantown are the sturdy\, elegant stone structures known today as Cliveden\, the Johnson House\, the Germantown Mennonite Meeting House\, and the Concord School House. Remarkably\, these structures can all be attributed to one builder\, Jacob Knorr. This tour will bring visitors into these charming and significant sites. We will investigate what we know about the building of early Germantown\, and what mysteries remain. \nIn the case of inclement weather\, this tour will be rescheduled. \nAdmission: $20 – General Admission | $10 – 19119 & 19144 residents\, Cliveden\, and National Trust members

DESCRIPTION:Cliveden offers free house tours the second Saturday of the month through October. Tours are available from 12 pm to 4 pm\, beginning on the hour; last tour of the day is at 3 pm. \nVisitors will view two exhibits: “Procuring Liberty in the Emerging Nation” and “Looking Glass.” No registration is needed. Visitors should come to the Barn (98 E. Cliveden Street\, 19119) and speak with a Cliveden Interpreter to begin their tour.
