SUMMARY:Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Philly Unwrapped\, come let your voice be heard about waste reduction and reuse in Philadelphia! \nPhiladelphia spends millions every year managing waste. Almost nothing prevents it. At the same time\, food and beverage businesses are required to purchase single-use packaging that increases operating costs and contributes to pollution that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities where waste is processed and incinerated. \nThere may be a better\, less wasteful way — and it saves money and protects public health. \nPhilly Unwrapped is bringing together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. \nWhat This Is\nJoin ECHO Systems\, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia\, Rethink Disposable’s Clean Water Fund and Trash Academy in this informative and engaging community event. \nLearn How to Use the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit — a free\, practical resource designed specifically for local food-sector businesses.\nCase studies show that businesses implementing reuse and waste prevention strategies save between $3\,000–$22\,000 annually\, while reducing trash volume\, improving operational efficiency\, and strengthening customer loyalty. Attendees will be able to join a funding consortium to demonstrate business need and interest in supporting a just transition toward reuse and waste prevention.\nThis event includes a community listening session. We want to hear directly from residents and business owners about concerns\, barriers\, and opportunities as we work to attract funding and build a just transition. \nWho Should Attend \nRestaurant\, café\, and food truck owners\nCaterers and event operators\nCorner store and grocery operators\nHospitality managers\nCommunity leaders and residents\nInstitutions and neighborhood organizations\nWe warmly invite City Council members\, local representatives\, community development corporations\, business improvement districts\, and neighborhood organizations to join this conversation. Advancing waste prevention presents an opportunity to strengthen fiscal stewardship\, support local businesses\, and protect public health — and we look forward to working together to explore what that can look like for Philadelphia. \nWhat You’ll Walk Away With\nClear\, implementable cost-saving strategies\nAccess to the free Philly-specific Toolkit\nEarly information about upcoming grant opportunities and how to participate in the funding consortium\nConnections to a growing network of local businesses and partners\nAn opportunity to help shape future funding and policy priorities\nThis is not a lecture. It’s a practical working session focused on real-world solutions. \nEvent Details \nLocation: PHMC — 4601 Market Street\, Philadelphia\, PA \nTransportation: Free onsite parking available at 47th & Haverford (see attached map) Also walking distance from the L \nTime: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM- arrive promptly \nOther Details: Light fare + coffee provided\nCost: Free — registration required\nFunding provided by EPA Region 3’s Thriving Communities – Green & Healthy Homes Initiative.\nWith support from the Story of stuff project and a generous match from Jeffery A Miller catering\nCoffee provided by High Point Cafe. \nShow less\nPHMC

SUMMARY:Author Talk | Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Thea Riofrancos will be in conversation with Malcolm Harris about Riofranco’s latest book\, Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism\, an in-depth analysis into the growing industry of green technologies and the environmental\, social\, and political consequences of the mining it requires. \nDrawing on groundbreaking fieldwork in Chile\, Nevada\, and Portugal\, Riofrancos explores the environmental and social costs of the global race to expand lithium mining amid supply chain concerns. With haunting descriptions of vulnerable ecosystems\, she examines how mining harms landscapes\, provokes protest\, takes center stage in national politics\, and links countries on the peripheries of the world economy to huge corporations\, commodity markets\, and powerful investors. While an unregulated mining boom could inflict irreversible harm\, Riofrancos offers compelling ideas about how to harmonize climate action with social justice. \nThea Riofrancos is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College\, a Strategic Co-Director of the Climate and Community Institute\, and a fellow at the Transnational Institute. \nMalcolm Harris is the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California\, Capitalism\, and the World. His latest book is What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required

SUMMARY:Crayfish Dinner Party!
DESCRIPTION:Like discovering new cultural cuisine? Looking for a fun night out with friends? Enjoy a summer evening at the American Swedish Historical Museum to indulge in a Swedish specialty: crayfish! \nAt one time the lakes of central Sweden were filled with crayfish\, but overfishing decimated their population. Eventually\, the government prohibited the catching of crayfish except for a short time in late summer. After going the whole summer without the delicacy\, the return of crayfish to the dinner table in August became a great cause for celebration\, a tradition that has continued through today. \nPlease join us on the Museum’s stunning terrace overlooking FDR Park for a crayfish dinner on Friday\, August 8th to experience our take on the Swedish crayfish tradition! Enjoy a buffet of crayfish and Swedish meatballs\, alongside potatoes\, cheese pie\, cucumber and beet salads\, desserts\, and a glass of aquavit\, all outside under our tent decorated with paper lanterns\, festive lights\, and all things crayfish! \n$60 for ASHM members and $70 for non-members. Register online by August 4th.\nhttps://www.americanswedish.org/events/crayfish-party-5
