SUMMARY:Bird Box Workshop at the Discovery Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Glen Foerd in learning how to create a bird box for your own home or green space! Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Glen Foerd both share a mission of maintaining local ecosystems along the Schuylkill and Delaware River\, and this is where your stewardship can help. \nWe will begin the workshop with a bird tour around Discovery Center and discuss why bird boxes (also known as nesting boxes) are essential to birds due to the decline of natural habitats. Then\, each participant will have the opportunity to assemble a bird box kit (using hammers and nails) which you will be able to take home at the end of the session! Instructions for mounting and ongoing maintenance will be included as well. \nRegistration is required\, with 20 spots available (if you and a child or friend want to work on one bird box together\, you can sign up as one spot). \nClick here for Registration: https://forms.gle/8b8AjnfNnms1SeLw7

SUMMARY:Help Preserve the Nation's History-One Document at a Time! at Parkway Central Library
DESCRIPTION:Discover how you can help deepen our understanding of American history by transcribing original post–Civil War documents. Your work will uncover stories of family\, resilience\, and community in the years following Emancipation.\nIn this Acts of Science: Connected program\, Smithsonian experts will introduce the Freedmen’s Bureau records\, explain their significance\, and share why your participation matters. Together\, we’ll explore how these documents illuminate the lives of formerly enslaved people during Reconstruction and why preserving them is vital for research and education. \nThis nationwide effort—led by the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, the Smithsonian Transcription Center\, and the Free Library of Philadelphia—aims to transcribe more than 1.7 million images\, making this the largest crowdsourcing project in Smithsonian history. \nThe event will be livestreamed via Zoom. Participants will follow along in real time while completing transcription activities on their own devices. \nJoin us in preserving the nation’s history—one document at a time! Click here for more information about the program series. \nTHIS EVENT WILL BE HELD IN THE HEIM CENTER\, FIRST FLOOR\, ROOM 131/132

SUMMARY:Winter Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Connor O’Hea at Rushton Woods Preserve to explore our winter birds! Even though our feathered friends are quieter this time of year\, they are still abundant everywhere. Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows flit about the underbrush\, Eastern Bluebirds hunt from their posts in the farm fields\, and sometimes even Eastern Towhees can be spotted in the thickets. As an ecologist and avid birder\, Connor has the privilege of working closely with birds in both the field and the hand. His experience ranges from watching birds in his backyard to bird banding for long-term monitoring purposes (including for Rushton Woods Banding Station and Foreman’s Branch Bird Observatory). REGISTER HERE Connor is particularly passionate about how changes in our environment are affecting bird populations\, and he loves sharing these insights with others. He enjoys leading nature walks like this one\, meeting like-minded people and those new to the subject: “I look forward to meeting you all\, pointing out some of our local feathered friends\, and answering any bird-related questions you might have along the way!”   Accessibility & Other Details: This bird walk will be light and easy with mostly even ground\, with access to bathroom facilities in the Rushton Conservation Center if needed. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Please bring binoculars if you have them.
