SUMMARY:Table Sessions: Kristal Sotomayor
DESCRIPTION:Journey Arts’ beloved Table Sessions returns in April to Bartram’s Garden\, curated by award-winning filmmaker Kristal Sotomayor. Prime yourself for an ebullient evening with the boisterous sounds of the kumbia-klezmer-punk collective Mariposas Galácticas\, whose music is inspired by their ancestors’ shared roots in “radical joy.” \nThen sit forward for a screening of Kristal’s short film Expanding Sanctuary  — the winner of the 2024 BlackStar Philadelphia Filmmaker Award — which flips the script on the current moment by telling the story of an immigrant mother’s triumphant fight for safety for Philly families. \nAnd\, of course\, leave filled not only with joy\, but with a delicious dinner by the James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martínez of South Philly Barbacoa.

SUMMARY:Earth Appreciation Day - Plants and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Temple University at the Discovery Center as we work to maintain our habitats and conservation work for Earth Day! This site is home to over 170+ species of birds\, many species of insects and mammals\, and up to thousands of visitors per year. Our efforts can aid in the livelihood of these animals and stewardship for the people. We’ll focus on removing invasive bushes and plants around the trailhead so we can plant native shrubs in the future\, as well as fill our seed packets for the public seed library. \nAfterwards\, we open our space to an open stage for those to come and share their voice and appreciation of our earth and community. This can be through poetry\, stories and other types of offerings. This session will start with a brief\, Strawberry Mansion history lesson from our neighborhood and tour leader Judith. \nTime: 1-2:30pm Volunteer Engagement / 2:30-4pm Open Stage \nVolunteer and Open Stage sign up can be found here! https://forms.gle/WEattkr7Q34WwufS8 \nReach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Photo Weaving workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at two images and wondered what they might say to each other? In this hands-on workshop\, artist and educator Kara Mshinda will guide participants through the art of photo weaving — a simple\, tactile technique that layers two photographs together using a classic basket weave pattern to create an entirely new image. \nWorking with pre-cut image sets featuring the birds\, flowers\, trees\, and waterways of Bartram’s Garden\, you’ll weave together photographs to create new compositions that blur the boundaries between species\, seasons\, and moments in time. No previous experience needed — just use your hands\, your images\, and your instincts.
