SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Opening Reception: A closer look by Gerri Spilka
DESCRIPTION:FRIEDAcommunity is proud to announce the show A closer look by Gerri Spilka.\nJoin us and the artist on Friday\, December 1\, First Friday\, during the opening reception from 6pm to 8pm.\nGerri Spilka considers herself to be an alchemist who takes ordinary pieces of cotton and transforms them into larger-than-life shapes of glorious\, luminous colors. Her work fuses seemingly disparate elements: modern figurative abstraction\, the grittiness of urban life\, and decades of observing people. She uses these elements to re-imagine traditional quilts\, making them into visual stories on the human experience.\nGerri’s work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. It is held in private and public collections\, including the International Quilt Museum (Lincoln\, NE)\, as well as Park Towne Place Art Collection and Temple University’s Fox School of Business (both in Philadelphia\, PA).\n100% of the sale proceeds of any artwork during the exhibition go to the artist. In return\, we have asked that selected artists schedule time to engage with our community through a workshop\, a demonstration\, or a discussion.\nDate: Friday\, December 1\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nMask recommended during this event. \nFor more information and to sign up\, please visit https://frieda.community/programs/gerri-spilka-opening-reception-12-1-23/

SUMMARY:Firebird: Built to Burn Theatrical Premiere
DESCRIPTION:A Story That’s Waited Eighteen Years To Be Told!\nFirebird: Built to Burn delves into a year in the making of the beloved Firebird Festival\, where a tight-knit community gathers every December to ignite a giant wooden phoenix. Fueled by their rustbelt spirit\, a diverse group of volunteers persevere through pandemic restrictions\, local government negotiations\, and months of arduous building to orchestrate a cathartic come-back festival after their absence in 2020. Told through intimate interviews and fly-on-the-wall verité\, Firebird: Built to Burn is a wholesome look into an unconventional tradition.\nThe premiere of ‘Firebird: Built to Burn’ is Wednesday\, November 29th\, at 7:00 PM. There will be a post-film discussion with the filmmakers after the screening. You can purchase tickets at The Colonial Theatre’s website. A limited engagement will continue through December 14th.

SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE: Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle
DESCRIPTION:The Strides Collective Presents: \nA World Premiere production of Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle \nDirected by Jonathan V. Edmondson\nAssistant Directed by Caitlin Alvarez\nHonorary Producer: Lauren Hughes \nFeaturing:\nA – Eliza Waterman\nZ – MJ Santry \nWednesday\, October 25 – Sunday\, October 29\, 2023\, at the Community Education Center (3500 Lancaster Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104). Sister of Mine runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. \nAbout the Play: A and Z\, former childhood friends recovering from compulsory heterosexuality\, imagine a series of encounters in which they unexpectedly reunite after substantial time apart\, exposing longings\, secrets\, and betrayals. Sister of Mine will be her first formally produced piece. \nKate holds a B.A. in English from Princeton University and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University\, and her short fiction and personal essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Whitefish Review\, Five Points\, Passages North\, and The North American Review; her essay “Passive Voice\,” which examines the language of rape\, was the recipient of the 2021 Terry Tempest Williams Prize in Creative Nonfiction and named a Notable Essay in the Best American Essays 2022. She is an active collaborator within The Pipeline Collective\, which first led her to playwriting\, and author behind the playful Substack Bardette\, which examines daily queer encounters. \nAbout The Strides Collective: Founded in 2020\, The Strides Collective is a nonprofit queer theatre company in Philadelphia that produces and develops theatrical work by emerging playwrights that embraces the queer experience through authentic\, modern\, and innovative storytelling. SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Reading + Poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special literary event celebrating ANYBODY HOME? (Blue Edge\, 2023)\, the poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove.\nThis event is made possible thanks to donations from our annual fundraiser.\nThe poems in Kay Cosgrove’s first collection are driven by curiosity – about herself\, the world\, and her place in it. Witty and elegantly restrained\, they ask the question: how do we live the lives we’ve made for ourselves? Cosgrove roams from barrooms to checkout lines to the enigma of motherhood; she is a teenager responsible for a sack-of-flour-as-a-baby\, and then an adult driving a teenage babysitter home. She explores the texture of our connections to strangers\, family\, ourselves\, and illuminates the sublime in the unimportant. The poems in Anybody Home? embrace life’s sweetness and shadows. Here\, the ordinary is unfathomable and the ineffable is ordinary.\nOther readers include: Christian Bancroft\, Lauren Hilger and Adrienne Perry \nTime: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nPrice: this is a free event open to the general public\nSign up at least 2 days prior to the event via email hello@frieda.community \nCheck website for more information www.frieda.community/programs/reading-poetry-debut-from-kay-cosgrove/
