SUMMARY:A DVAA Screening of "The Invisible Man" (1933)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at DVAA for a special screening of James Whale’s 1933 classic “The Invisible Man”. Popcorn and candy will be provided at the event. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Movie: While researching a new drug\, Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles on a potion that can make him invisible. When he reveals his new ability to his old mentor and his fiancée\, it’s clear that a side effect of the potion is insanity. Jack goes on a violent rampage\, and the police struggle to hunt him down\, unable to see their target\, while his mentor and his former partner desperately try to devise a plan to capture him. \nThis is an accompanying event of Colin Pezzano’s Group Exhibition “Materialize”. \nAbout the Exhibition: Craft Movie Club presents: Materialize explores the intersection of classic cinema and contemporary craft practices. Sixteen artists\, working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal\, and glass\, respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, The Invisible Man. In the film\, invisibility is made possible through the extraction of a flower used originally to bleach textiles. Just as the scientist Griffin transforms himself by manipulating the natural world\, these artists transform raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects. Ninety-one years later\, the film’s themes of invisibility\, scientific experimentation\, and ethical dilemmas remain relevant. This exhibition redefines expectations\, blending experimental techniques with traditional crafts to provoke thought and inspire a modern audience.

SUMMARY:Owl Howl
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday\, November 6\, 2024 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, November 13).\nAbout the Instructor:\nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.\nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds.

What better way to activate our community than with powerful art\, and powerful actions. \n—- \nAbout One PA:\n“One PA is a base building organization led by community members\, creating a powerful voice for racial\, economic and social justice in pennsylvania.” \nMission:\nWe are building a movement for political representation that stands for racial\, economic and environmental justice and against profits over people and voter disenfranchisement. OnePA members endorse political candidates and mobilize to elect them.\nOnePA works to challenge discouragement that comes up in communities about our political system while we fight to protect and expand democracy and voting rights. We know that meaningful change comes from everyday people coming together to have a voice in our political system and we are deeply committed to doing this work. \nHistory:\nOne PA was founded in 2011 as a part of SEIU’s Fight for a Fair Economy\, originally called One Pittsburgh. We fought for working families in Allegheny County and worked to change the conversation about injustice and the U.S. economy. We recognized the need to build the political power of working families\, and launched grassroots efforts to knock on tens of thousands of doors. We built a robust member base and directly took on structural inequality. By 2015 the pieces had come together merging the best traditions of labor\,community organizing and civic engagement into a vision of a new independent organization. A year later\, we expanded to Philadelphia and became One PA. \nToday\, One PA is a formidable membership organization dedicated to building a movement for progressive\, multiracial working class power with a deep focus on Black liberation. We are building a powerful political movement led by people from communities impacted by racial\, economic and gender injustice. We prioritize deep leadership development and political education with our member leaders\, canvassers and organizers\, to center frontline experiences and build a strong movement leadership pipeline.. We fight for policy reforms that improve the lives of working families\, strengthen the community\, and grow our political power. \nAbout InLiquid:\nInLiquid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities and exposure for visual artists through exhibitions in the InLiquid Gallery and satellite exhibition spaces\, all while serving as a free\, online\, public hub that showcases Philadelphia’s vast visual arts culture. We actively promote artists’ work online by constructing public\, searchable high quality pages that include contact information\, artwork\, resumes/bios\, statements\, relevant links and exhibit history. Through our numerous ongoing exhibition programs distributed throughout the city in galleries and alternative spaces\, meaningful partnerships with cultural organizations and corporate clients\, unique community-engaged events\, and the nurturing of relationships with art collectors\, we introduce and connect the quality\, diversity and magnitude of our region’s visual art culture to broader audiences\, thus directly impacting Philadelphia’s cultural community and economy. \nAbout The Voice of the People:\nThe Voice of the People is a juried open-call exhibition featuring 12 InLiquid Member Artists. This exhibition invited current InLiquid artist members to submit works that explore American Politics. Each artist brings a unique artistic perspective on the political choices we make\, the systems we exist within\, and portrayed security within our political environment.

SUMMARY:AAMP Family Fun Day: History is Alive! Sojourner Truth Storytime
DESCRIPTION:On October 13\, 2024\, from 1 to 3 PM\, get ready for an unforgettable adventure as we step into history with the legendary Sojourner Truth! Start your visit off by meeting Sojourner in the Conversations Gallery 2 at 1 PM for a Black History pop quiz game. Stop by the front desk and grab your materials for the scavenger hunt to uncover clues hidden throughout the museum’s galleries. \nAt 2 PM\, we invite our youngest guests and their families to gather in the Jack T. Franklin Auditorium for an electrifying storytime. Listen and learn as Sojourner delivers a dramatic reading about life on the Underground Railroad with her brave companions. \nDon’t miss this chance to relive history in a way you’ve never experienced! \nAbout Dr. Daisy Century\, Sojourner Truth Re-Enactor: \nDaisy Century 2 \nDr. Daisy Century and Ms. Sojourner Truth are both powerful singers and very intelligent women\, whether self-taught or academically trained. Almost as impressively tall as the woman she portrays\, Century gives a commanding performance of Ms. Truth\, bringing to life a woman undeterred by incredible obstacles\, a woman who mixed with the leading figures of her day\, including Susan B. Anthony\, Abraham Lincoln\, and Ulysses S. Grant. Audience members are urged to \nconsider the twin goals of racial and gender parity of equal importance. We are inspired by Ms. Truth’s fiery wit\, as exemplified by her rejoinder to a Screenshot 2024-09-20 163037comment that since she smoked a pipe (at one time)\, her conduct did not reflect cleanliness being next to godliness. Said Sojourner\, “When I die\, I expect to leave my breath behind.” The audience has the opportunity to sign Sojourner Truth’s Book of Life\, signifying their connection to Ms. Truth’s legacy. \nInformation pulled from Characters | Dr. Daisy Century. SUMMARY:Author Event: The Ballad of Roy Benavidez
DESCRIPTION:Cost: FREE \nRoom 108 \nUniversity of Pennsylvania historian William Sturkey will discuss his latest book\, which tells the dramatic life of Vietnam War hero Roy Benavidez\, revealing how Hispanic Americans have long shaped US history\, from “a major new voice [with] lyrical powers as a biographer” (David W. Blight) \nIn May 1968\, while serving in Vietnam\, Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez led the rescue of a reconnaissance team surrounded by hundreds of enemy soldiers. He saved the lives of at least eight of his comrades that day in a remarkable act of valor that left him permanently disabled. Awarded the Medal of Honor after a yearslong campaign\, Benavidez became a highly sought-after public speaker\, a living symbol of military heroism\, and one of the country’s most prominent Latinos.  An unwavering patriot alternately celebrated and snubbed by the country he loved\, Benavidez embodied many of the contradictions inherent in twentieth-century Latino life. The Ballad of Roy Benavidez places that experience firmly at the heart of the American story. \nSturkey will be in conversation with Nelson Diaz\, the first Hispanic judge in Pennsylvania history. \nRegistration encouraged but not required
