SUMMARY:Recklessly Optimistic by Adrian Hatfield - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Adrian Hatfield makes work addressing his anxiety about our current environmental crisis\, balanced by hope that humanity can rise to meet the challenge. The paintings convey those experiences in tension: dread\, splendor\, joy\, terror\, wonder and the absurdity of human inaction. Their iconography samples and ?recombines elements from art history\, scientific illustration\, pop culture and satire\, with a goal of existing somewhere between a requiem\, a science fiction fever dream\, and a call-to-arms. \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, July 13\, 6-8:30 p.m. \nClosing Reception: Saturday\, August 31\, 6-8:30 p.m. \nGallery Hours: Saturdays 12-4 p.m.\, or by appointment \nchimaeragallery.com \nhello@chimaeragallery.com \n3502 Scotts Lane\, #2113 \nPhiladelphia\, PA 19129

SUMMARY:Capturing the Surreal
DESCRIPTION:Capturing the Surreal highlights the work of three artists inventing bright and new realities. Vibrant\, color-forward\, and an explosion of energy\, each artist’s work is a commentary on society that begins with the question: what is real and what isn’t? Through photography\, artificial reality\, and animation\, the artists evoke dream-like fantasies that intertwine their lived experiences with their interaction between the physical and the virtual world. Immersive and powerful\, their work dives into a space of light and color that threads humorous narratives of the visually and conceptually surreal. Kelli Williams and Charmaine Caire bring puppets\, dolls\, and figurines to life in their photography\, Williams with a certain familiarity with the so-present social media space\, Caire in the absurd scenarios she stages\, both existing in the in-between of reality and fiction. Eva Wu’s potent and saturated use of color and textures extorts intimate otherworldly dimensions reminding us we are somewhere idyllic\, somewhere unfamiliar.

SUMMARY:Philly Juneteenth Celebration Featuring: Dr. Leonard & Rosalind Jeffries (Wednesday June 19\, 2024 5pm-9pm at The Rotunda )
DESCRIPTION:A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Family Fun\, Guest Speakers\, Fashion & Talent Showcase Vendors\,Food\, EDUTAINMENT Hosted: Bigga Dre “Amun Sen Hotep Re” \nOver 60 years\, first begining as individuals and later in marriage\, Dr. Rosalind and Leonard Jeffries have began their Great and Majestic Walk with African Peoples and our Great Culture. Their Walk has spanded more than 25 African Countries and Hundreds of African Leaders and at the same time they were instrumental in fusing the African American Experience with their African Continental Experience ! \n1865 people were not interested in immigration into the United States. In fact\, the United States in the 1850’s and 1860’s had established a Know- Nothing Party; they did not want immigrants; they were against immigrants; and the immigrants that they were against were Papists\, German and Irish Catholics. There was no prospect of bringing in immigrants from central\, eastern\, and southern Europe; these were the unwashed masses. Eighteen-sixty-five was our period. Eighteen-sixty-five was when half a million Black people\, a quarter-million of them official Union army\, navy troops-participated in the Civil War. The question of Black folks getting into their history\, starting to fight for liberty and struggling for what is right is not the question of disuniting America. It has been our struggle that has kept America united. It has been our struggle that has raised anew the liberties that this nation professes. It has been our struggle that has created the 14th Amendment that became the amendment that the women could use and others could use\, when they talk about the expansion of liberty in America. \n-Dr. Leonard Jeffries

SUMMARY:Nurture with Nature: Memory Pockets
DESCRIPTION:Working with the healing power of plants can help to decrease stress and anxiety\, process grief\, and improve overall well-being. Through activities that combine plant materials with eco-mindfulness and creative tools\, the workshops in this therapeutic horticulture series explore the five senses to support connection with ourselves\, one another\, and the natural environment of Nature’s Sanctuary\, Laurel Hill’s native plant garden and green burial area. Sessions are led by Kate Irvine\, a trained horticulturist and mixed media artist with a certificate in Horticultural Therapy\, joined by guest speakers. Participants are invited to attend one\, some\, or all of the sessions. \nMay Session: Memory Pockets\nDiscover new life in the spring garden a la “I Spy.” Prompts will guide a meditative search for natural objects as we learn to identify native plant materials\, explore the hindsight of remembering the past\, and consider the foresight of looking ahead. We’ll then use our found object collections to create personal shadowboxes.
