SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Across the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway to America

The exhibit highlights the Sloopers’ experiences on the open sea and their eventual arrival in the United States. \nAcross the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway is part of Crossings Bicentennial in North America. The exhibit is made possible with support from the Sons of Norway Foundation. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Steven CW Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Join The Print Center and Steven CW Taylor to hear the artist and gallerist discuss his practice\, his beautiful wood-bound artist book\, his Germantown gallery space and the overarching philosophy of Ubuntu that guides his work. \nTaylor moves between photography\, printmaking and material exploration. His photographs reflect his lived experience shaped by movement\, observation and choice. In 2021\, he founded Ubuntu Fine Art\, a gallery grounded in the principle of Ubuntu – which means “I am an amalgamation of the people I’ve met along the way.” It operates as both a fine art space and a neighborhood anchor. Ubuntu is the thread that connects every image\, conversation and encounter that happens within it. Ubuntu Fine Art is a physical expression of Taylor’s lived philosophy – one that values presence\, curiosity and connection. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Presented in-person and on Zoom. \nRegister for Zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/xdgPWi5CQ9-dimXErsYeqA#/registration \nImage: “SA Blues” Special Edition ©Steven CW Taylor 2025

SUMMARY:Philly Dreamin' & Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Solo Show of Artist and Educator Dominique Samarco. \nDreams are powerful—they shape our aspirations\, offer direction\, and serve as blueprints for a better future. To build the life we envision\, we must first dare to dream. As educators\, it is our responsibility to nurture and inspire students to transform their dreams into reality. Art educators\, in particular\, play a vital role in helping students manifest their visions\, as dreams are the foundation of success. \nDreaming has been central to my journey. Vivid\, colorful images of my future have always guided me\, a perspective reflected in my artwork. Growing up in Philadelphia—the poorest major city in America—dreams often serve as a beacon of hope\, a means of escaping hardship and achieving stability. My paintings are a visual narrative of my past\, present\, and future—interwoven with my hopes\, challenges\, and growth. \nThis body of work retraces my personal journey and connection to my community through the lens of equity and currere\, an educational method that explores experience in four stages: regressive\, progressive\, analytical\, and synthetic. By revisiting my past and envisioning my future\, I have examined how these timelines intersect to shape my present. My paintings depict meaningful places in Philadelphia\, bridging personal history with the collective experience of my community. Through this work\, I aim to highlight the importance of representation in fine art—how seeing one’s home and experiences reflected in art can foster a sense of belonging\, particularly for those who have historically lacked access to artistic spaces. \nAs both an artist and educator\, I draw from my experiences growing up in a working-class family in Philadelphia. I am the first in my family to pursue higher education\, a journey shaped by resilience and determination. My work reflects not only my own dreams but also my commitment to educational equity and city-based youth. \nPhiladelphia’s deep financial disparities underscore the need for opportunity\, access\, and visibility. These paintings are my visual “Why”—a fusion of dreamlike optimism and gritty realism that embodies my life’s journey and the realities of the students I serve. Together\, we navigate our pasts\, presents\, and futures\, mirroring the broader human experience. \nThis series is a tribute—to my community\, my aspirations\, and the enduring power of dreams. \nPhilly Dreamin’ & Becoming will be on view in Gallery 1 from May 1 – May 25\, 2025 with an opening reception on Sunday\, April 4th from 4-7pm.

In 2024\, Rothenberg released Secret Sounds of Ponds\, a book/music/performance initiative which reveals the unknown music beneath the surface of even the most ordinary pond. Join him for an afternoon of aquatic vibrations\, bug solos\, and inter-species jamming. David uses hydrophones (underwater microphones) to tune into live bug sounds and then improvises\, using his clarinet to duet with the plants and insects amplified from under the water. You’ll never see a pond quite the same way again. All ages are welcome\, though the morning concert will be more oriented towards kids and will have hands-on activities for younger listeners who wish to touch and draw as well as listen. \nBoth concerts are free and open to the public\, but please RSVP \nSunday\, April 6th\n9-11 AM at FDR Park’s Edgewood Lake (family friendly auxiliary activities provided) &\n5-7 PM at West Fairmount Park’s Centennial Lake (for the more contemplative crowd)
