SUMMARY:The Translingual Remix: A Practical Literary Translation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An in-person workshop with Transversal\, co-sponsored by Blue Stoop and The Head & The Hand. \nTranslating literature into another language builds bridges and amplifies voices through shared stories. It’s also a challenging but highly rewarding creative practice that draws on skills like knowledge of multiple languages and cultures\, close reading and research\, and problem solving. In this workshop\, Emily Hunsberger (Mount Airy-based literary translator and member of Transversal\, Philadelphia’s literary translation collective) will help pull back the curtain on different approaches to the translation process\, guide participants through a practical exercise with literary texts\, facilitate an affirming conversation to reflect on the experience\, and suggest next steps for developing a personal translation practice. \nThis workshop is designed for folks with 1) an interest in creative writing and translation and 2) proficiency in English and at least one other language. No experience in literary translation is required\, and texts for the translation exercise will be provided by the facilitator. Participants will have the option to translate a text into English or into their other language(s). \nSpace is limited. All ticket proceeds benefit Blue Stoop and The Head & The Hand.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: A Guide to Witches
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “A Guide to Witches\,” on the figure of the witch in history\, legend\, folklore\, and fairy tales\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and literature at the University of Pennsylvania. \nGet ready for something spellbinding: A look at various depictions of witches as reflections of ideas about female sexuality\, independence\, agency\, and power. \nOffering up this pre-Halloween treat will be folklorist Linda Lee\, who earned rave reviews in giving this talk at the Black Squirrel Club a year ago and has captivated audiences at this Fishtown venue with her past discussions of dark Christmas folklore and the goddess Persephone. \nWe’ll start with an introduction to witches from European folklore\, fairy tales\, and legends. You’ll learn how they’re generally portrayed as powerful\, solitary\, and defiant figures who can be either helpful or harmful. They may appear as mothers\, helpers who aid heroes on quests\, or monsters to be vanquished. They can represent a threat to the community by snatching children or by pilfering cows’ milk. \nIndividual witches who will be conjured up include the child-eating witch from Grimms’ “Hansel and Gretel” and Baba Yaga\, the ambiguous witch of Slavic folklore who lives in a hut on chicken legs and flies around inside a giant mortar while clutching a big pestle. Lee contrasts such fictional depictions with the ideas about witches and witchcraft espoused by Christian demonological thought. \nYou’ll learn how witches are described by early modern sources like Malleus Maleficarum\, the 15th-century treatise on witchcraft which also served as a witch hunters’ manual. Such texts presented witches as entirely malevolent figures who gain magical powers through a pact with the Devil (usually signed with menstrual blood). They depicted witches as using a special ointment that empowers them to fly to a Witches’ Sabbath to dance and perform demonic rituals. \nYou’ll see how such ideas were visually reinforced through engravings\, woodcuts\, and drawings\, by artists like Albrecht Dürer\, that depicted naked women riding broomsticks and dancing with devils. \nYou’ll come away with a better understanding of why witches are among the most versatile\, notorious\, and enduring figures from fairy tales and legends and remain an iconic part of contemporary Halloween traditions. Feel free to dress witchy if you wish. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30. ) \nImage: From “Preparation for the Witches’ Sabbath\,” by 17th Century Flemish artist David Teniers the Younger.

SUMMARY:Truth and the Novel\, author Geraldine Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth\, said Albert Camus. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks spent half her life as a journalist\, running after the truth in difficult places where despots and warlords were desperate to obfuscate. Later she turned to fiction\, but her novels always hew as closely as possible to historical truth. In the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2025 Dr. S.T. Lee Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities\, Brooks will discuss her process as a novelist and how it is informed by the toolkit she acquired as a foreign correspondent covering conflicts in the Middle East\, Africa\, and the Balkans. \nA book signing will follow the lecture and Q&A.\n——\nAustralian-born Geraldine Brooks is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist renowned for her deeply immersive\, character-driven historical novels. Her fiction debut\, Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague\, became an international bestseller\, translated into more than 25 languages. In 2006\, Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her second novel\, March. Her other bestsellers include People of the Book\, Caleb’s Crossing\, The Secret Chord\, and Horse. In addition to fiction\, Brooks has authored acclaimed nonfiction books\, including Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women\, Foreign Correspondence: A Penpal’s Journey from Down Under to All Over\, and The Idea of Home. Her latest book\, Memorial Days\, was published in 2025.

SUMMARY:Tarnish (pay-what-you-wish)
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by The New Yorker as “ever-adventurous\,” PRISM Quartet presents a pay-what-you-wish program of extraordinary works composed for the ensemble on October 11 at the Germantown Branch of Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and October 12 at Christ & St. Stephen’s Church in New York City. The program consists of Yarn by Marcos Balter\, Tarnish by Nina C. Young\, KEEN by Roshanne Etezady\, Fair and Balanced? by Frank J. Oteri\, and Graffiti II by Roberto Sierra. \nPRISM co-founder and tenor saxophonist Matthew Levy writes\, “the works on the program are among the group’s most meaningful commissions. Each resonates deeply and tests the bounds of what is possible on the saxophone. The program’s title is a nod to Ms. Young’s work\, Tarnish\, which is about revealing hidden beauty\, beauty that is ephemeral\, vanishing into the ether. All of the works on the program touch on this idea\, including Yarn by Marcos Balter\, a lament for the late saxophonist Ryan Muncy that explores the fragility of yarn as a metaphor for the fragility of life itself. PRISM recently recorded both works\, along with Mr. Sierra’s Graffiti II for a 2026 release on XAS. KEEN and Fair and Balanced? appear on previously released PRISM albums.”

SUMMARY:"Sessions with the Muse" Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Sessions with the Muse” offers a peek into my creative process\, showcasing the documentation of my experiments\, the pages of my journals\, and an array of samples\, messy prototypes\, doodles\, sketches\, and pieces that are complete—for now—alongside those that remain works in progress. This collection emphasizes process and materials\, each drawing me back to nature and\, ultimately\, to my own wild nature. These sessions are practices\, pathways I’ve explored to find inspiration: looking to the light within\, channeling source energy\, and becoming quiet enough to hear the golden wisdom of ancestors. Through these pathways\, I seek the glow of inner muses to guide practices and illuminate pathways to purposeful\, meaningful creation. \nOver the last year as artist-in-residence at the Random Tea Room\, I’m was able to share the creative practices that help me connect with myself\, with nature\, with others\, and with sources of creative energy and inspiration—the muse within. I look forward to creating\, solving small process puzzles\, and playing together. Join me for journaling\, weaving\, mending\, natural dyeing… and plenty of tea and plant magic! SUMMARY:Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s The Beautyful Ones Mural Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4 | 12–4 pm | 5547 Chester Ave\, Philadelphia \nJoin us for a massive afternoon block party\, celebrating Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s new mural in the heart of the city’s Africatown neighborhood. Mural Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have collaborated to bring the internationally renowned artist to Philadelphia to recreate her artwork\, The Beautyful Ones Series #1c\, as her first permanent public art installation. \nIn her methodically layered compositions\, Crosby combines painted depictions of people\, places\, and subjects from her life with photographic transfers derived from her personal image archive\, Nigerian magazines\, and other mass media sources. The resulting works are visual tapestries that bring to life the personal and social dimensions of contemporary life while powerfully expressing the complexities of African diasporic identity. \nThis Saturday afternoon event is open to the public\, with free water ice and refreshments\, live African dance and drum performances\, spirited DJ sets\, and Henna painting\, tote bag airbrushing\, and other art activations.
