SUMMARY:TERRA: Bodies and Territories
DESCRIPTION:The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education presents TERRA: Bodies and Territories\, an immersive performance staged outdoors on forested land. This innovative theatrical work is the creation of Silvana Cardell\, an acclaimed choreographer whose work contends with social struggles. TERRA: Bodies and Territories confronts the profound shared vulnerabilities between women’s bodies and the natural environment. In this highly experimental work\, a multi-generational ensemble of women and femme dancers enact a sequence of symbolic narratives.\nComposer Devin Arne amplifies the drama of the forest with a sound score that blends field recordings and musical instrumentation. Sculptural set pieces by visual artist Sarah Kavage and costumes by Vasi Zivanic visually complement the natural environment\, the dancers’ movements\, and Cardell’s conceptual themes.\nTERRA will be performed outdoors on June 13\,  20\, 21\, 22\, 28 and 29. Online ticket sales will close at noon on the date of the performance. Unless the show is sold out\, tickets will be sold at the door.\nPurchase Tickets\nPerformance Space\nTERRA is performed outdoors in a forested space with open seating. In case of severe weather\, ticket holders will be contacted via email about rescheduled performances.\nClick here for a PDF of what to expect when you attend TERRA: Bodies & Territories at the Schuylkill Center. \nGetting to the Schuylkill Center\nThe Schuylkill Center is located in Upper Roxborough\, Northwest Philadelphia\, at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road\, Philadelphia\, PA 19128.
Sculptural set pieces by visual artist Sarah Kavage and costumes by Vasi Zivanic visually complement the natural environment\, the dancers’ movements\, and Cardell’s conceptual themes.\nTERRA will be performed outdoors on June 13\, 14\, 15 and 20\, 21\, and 22.\nPurchase Tickets\nPerformance Space\nTERRA is performed outdoors in a forested space with open seating. Audience members are invited to sit on natural log “seats” and stand or move freely in the performance space. If you need assistance with accommodations due to mobility limitations or if you require guaranteed seating\, please check “yes” on the registration form when you purchase tickets. In case of severe weather\, ticket holders will be contacted via email about rescheduled performances.\nGetting to the Schuylkill Center\nThe Schuylkill Center is located in Upper Roxborough\, Northwest Philadelphia\, at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road\, Philadelphia\, PA 19128. SUMMARY:Artist as Activist
DESCRIPTION:GLASSBORO\, NJ – Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is excited to announce the participating artists who will be included in the 2025 New Jersey Arts Annual for Fine Art\, presented in partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, opening Saturday\, June 7th\, 2025\, 4 -7 pm. \nOur esteemed jurors\, Brittany Webb\, Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of 20th Century Art and the John Rhoden Collection\, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)\, and Dejay Duckett\, Director of Curatorial Services\, African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) selected artists from over 300 entries and include:\nCatherine Allen\, ShinYoung An\, Ellis Angel\, Donna Bassin\, Kristian Battell\,\nKirstin Demer\, Laura Frazure\, Ellen Hanauer\, Sam Horowitz\, Christopher Lopez\, Chanika Svetvilas\, Hui Tian\, Ylvia Asal\, Michael DalCerro\, Adam Gustavson\,\nTony Khawam\, Krystle Lemonias\, Jazlyne Sabree\, and Alan Willoughby\, \nArtist as Activist presents work that are artistic responses to the concept of activism. The selected artists use their creative practices to challenge societal norms\, raise awareness\, and inspire audiences to engage critically with the world around them.\nThe works address a broad spectrum of urgent topics—including human rights\, environmental stewardship\, racial equity\, health and well-being\, and political engagement. \nRather than employing overt or reactionary tactics\, these artists adopt a more nuanced approach. Their work invites viewers to engage with complex issues on their own terms\, promoting personal reflection and dialogue rather than prescribing a singular viewpoint.\nSome artists employ humor to disarm and draw in the viewer\, while others use ambiguity or conceptual forms to allow multiple interpretations. Scale is also used deliberately\, amplifying the urgency of the challenges we face collectively.\nUltimately\, this exhibition presents art as a vehicle for advocacy—illuminating injustices\, proposing alternatives\, and envisioning change. Through emotion\, experience\, and truth\, these artists seek to cultivate empathy\, spark conversation\, and inspire action. \nThe New Jersey Arts Annual is a unique series of exhibitions highlighting the State’s visual and performing artists. In partnership with major museums around the state\, one exhibition takes place each year\, alternating between host institutions. These exhibitions are open to any artist currently living or working in New Jersey. The Arts Annual series is sponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts. SUMMARY:DonChristian Jones: The Politics of Mourning IV
DESCRIPTION:DonChristian Jones is a postdisciplinary artist and social sculptor whose practice blurs the boundaries between visual art\, music\, performance\, and social intervention. Working across media and modes\, his work engages architecture\, community\, and futurity—often emerging from spaces shaped by surveillance\, abandonment\, or resistance. \nRaised in Philadelphia and based in New York\, DonChristian’s early years painting inside Rikers Island and other carceral institutions ground his work in both aesthetic experimentation and civic urgency. His installations\, soundworks\, and performances have appeared at The Whitney Museum\, MoMA PS1\, The Shed\, New Museum\, and Brooklyn Museum\, among others. \nIn 2020\, he founded Public Assistants Inc.—a radical mutual aid network and community design studio that reimagines urban space as a site of liberation\, care\, and creative infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Joiri Minaya: Venus Flytrap
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar presents a site-specific\, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden\, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell\, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom\, extraction\, and ecology in North America’s oldest surviving botanical garden. \nMuch like a Venus flytrap\, the plant this project is named for\, Joiri Minaya’s practice often employs beauty before its bite\, utilizing sensuality\, lush florals and hues to invite deeper reflection on thornier aspects of history and the impacts of colonialism. For this project\, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series\, custom textile elements\, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram’s Garden. \nEstablished in 1728\, Bartram’s Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America\, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia’s history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for Indigenous trade to the role of founder John Bartram in popularizing Eurocentric notions of “modern botany\,” Bartram’s Garden can be understood as a microcosm for the ongoing colonial experiment. With Venus Flytrap\, Minaya extends her longrunning interest in foregrounding the histories and possibilities of local and Indigenous plant life. Together\, Minaya and Cassell seek to reveal hidden histories of labor and anti-colonial resistance buried in the grounds of Bartram’s Garden and historic Kingsessing\, and their echoes across the Americas.

SUMMARY:Bodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy - Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A Film Screening and Conversation with Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, Silvana Cardell\, and Mey-Yen Moriuchi at Taller Puertorriqueño\nBodies & Territories: Ecofeminist Legacy brings together choreographer Silvana Cardell\, filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta\, and art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi for a screening and conversation that reflects on and reimagines ecofeminist artistic practice. Silvana Cardell’s new production TERRA: Bodies & Territories will premier in June on the forested land of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in northwest Philadelphia. Cardell’s production aligns the bodies of her dance ensemble with the land\, merging human movement with nature to reveal our inextricable livelihood and empowerment.\nIn this program leading up to the June performances\, Cardell’s work will be discussed in conversation with the groundbreaking work of the artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985)\, whose performative artistic practice embedded her own body into the land. Filmmaker Raquel Cecilia Mendieta introduces Ana Mendieta’s work through two short films\, Ana Mendieta\, Nature Inside (8:23 min) and Whispering Cave (27 min) for this exclusive screening. Bringing Cardell’s new production and Mendieta’s work together\, art historian Mey-Yen Moriuchi will moderate a conversation on the legacy of ecofeminist artistic practice and its relevance today.\n \nRegister Now\n \nAbout the Presenters: \nSilvana Cardell\, a dancer\, choreographer\, and educator\, has been awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography.
