DESCRIPTION:Percy Street’s luminous “Electric Street” will host a First Friday block party this Friday\, October 2nd\, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.\, on the 1300 block of S. Percy Street in Passyunk Square. \nHosted by Nice Things Handmade and Percy Street Project\, this event will feature more than 40 vendors\, including handmade goods\, artwork\, jewelry\, and more. Live painting will also take place throughout the evening\, with artists creating murals on a four-sided community mural wall presented by Rose Bear Arts. \nMusic is scheduled all evening\, with performances by banjo player Houston West\, Jacob Waters\, and DJs Linz and Mars. Light bites will be available from local bakery\, The Underbites Bites. \nKnown for its illuminating lights and murals\, Electric Street was created by artists David Guinn and Drew Billiau in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Knight Foundation. The installation features illuminated artwork and murals throughout the narrow alley. \nThe event is free and open to all ages. Leashed dogs are welcome.

SUMMARY:Russell Brodie- Paintings 2001–2026
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Elizabeth Spungen\, Tarver\, Bullock and Burton will reflect on their lifelong journeys shaped by Black cowboy culture\, their commitment to preserving its vital cultural history\, and how they have come together for The Long Ride Home project. \nRon Tarver was a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer for more than 30 years\, where he received a Pulitzer Prize and numerous other awards. Tarver has also been awarded Guggenheim Foundation\, Independence Foundation\, NEA and Pew Fellowships. His work has been widely exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally and is included in many public collections. \nJordan Bullock is a Philadelphia-based racehorse trainer whose work is rooted in the city’s tradition of Black urban horsemanship. Raised in North Philadelphia\, he grew up as part of the White House Stables in Brewerytown\, where his father\, George “Bumpsey” Bullock\, was a central figure. Bullock gained attention as a young subject of Ron Tarver’s series about Philadelphia’s Black cowboys in the early 1990s. Today\, he trains at Parx Racetrack\, continuing a lifelong dedication shaped by family\, community and enduring cultural traditions. \nArt T. Burton spent 40 years in higher education as both a Professor of History and an administrator in African American Student Affairs. Burton is an award-winning author who published the first books on African American and Native American outlaws and lawmen in the Wild West\, as well as African Americans soldiers. His most recent work\, Cherokee Bill: Black Cowboy\, Indian Outlaw\, was published in 2020. In addition to receiving numerous recognitions\, Burton has appeared in documentaries and shows on the History Channel\, FOX and AHC. He was recently named the Historian for the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum of Fort Worth\, TX.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026 at 2 PM in the Art Department for a talk by Philadelphia artist Cavin Jones. \nCavin Jones is a painter\, muralist\, and collagist whose figurative work is inspired by American history\, particularly the African American experience. Jones has said that his work is “a catalyst to stimulate thought and promote discussion about various issues prevalent in society.” His dynamic compositions often feature contrasting elements that as he says\, “infuse the paintings with layers of meaning and associations.” \nCavin will talk about his art journey\, including his public mural work. After the talk in the Art Department\, we’ll visit the Print and Picture Collection to view the original drawings for Cavin’s reimagined Alice in Wonderland. Cavin will have copies of his books available for purchase.

In this workshop\, participants will learn the basics of hand papermaking\, creating sheets from locally grown materials. The session includes a walk around the Morris to observe plants used in papermaking and other paper-related crafts such as surface dyeing. DESCRIPTION:Dyani White Hawk brings her groundbreaking practice—where traditional Lakota design meets bold abstract painting—into conversation with A Nation of Artists\, exploring how Indigenous artists have always been essential to the American story\, even when institutions failed to recognize them. \nWhite Hawk’s monumental works challenge viewers to reconsider what American art means. By weaving together star quilts\, geometric abstraction\, and materials that carry cultural memory\, she creates a visual language that honors ancestral knowledge while pushing contemporary art forward. Her work asks essential questions: Whose traditions count as “American”? How do artists maintain cultural continuity while innovating fearlessly? What happens when we finally tell the full story of American creativity? \nThis conversation\, moderated by scholar and curator Leah Triplett\, brings together themes of tradition\, continuity\, and innovation in Indigenous art—illuminating how Native artists have shaped American visual culture for centuries\, often without credit or recognition. \nIn collaboration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Artists on Art lecture series\, this event celebrates how contemporary artists expand our understanding of American art history by insisting we look deeper\, question assumptions\, and make space for voices that have always been here. \nThis program is offered in a hybrid format—attend in person at PAFA or watch the live stream on YouTube. SUMMARY:Jade Chloe
DESCRIPTION:Jade Chloe” is a self entitled performance which is part of the all media arts festival known as the Philly Fringe. It is a celebration of self expression and self determination. This performance has a total runtime of thirty minutes and encompasses a brilliant cast of dancers who strengthen viewer’s understanding in addition to sharing a new perspective on empathy\,individuality\, and artistry.\nJade Chloe is an emerging artist whom currently trains through Philadelphia Ballet’s new Contemporary Division. She is formerly a graduate of Alvin Ailey’s high school program in collaboration with Professional Performing Arts School. At the Alvin Ailey school\, she studied ballet\, jazz\, and modern techniques such as graham and horton. Jade additionally trained at Steps on Broadway Academy after my afternoons at Alvin Ailey. During Jade Chloe’s junior year of highschool she pursued choreography through Dance Lab New York’s next gen Apprenticeship in the Spring of 2024. In addition to dance\, Jade is pursuing academic studies at Temple University where she will be a sophomore in the Fall of 2026.\nHer performance is heavily informed by her training at the School of Philadelphia Ballet. The show itself encompasses contemporary\, ballet\, jazz\, and modern influences and takes you on the journey of Jade’s life for the past year along with the soundtrack of that time.

DESCRIPTION:“Art Under the Stars” Returns for Its Fourth Annual Celebration of Living Artists. In a world where artists are often celebrated only after they’re gone\, Art Under the Stars honors them now. This annual show returns on Saturday\, August 22\, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the lush Sculpture Courtyard for an evening celebrating living artists\, creativity\, and life together under a glowing night sky. \nFounded by Visual Artist and Event Curator Jona Shreeves-Taylor (@J.Taylor)\, this celebration was created from the belief that “artists deserve to receive their flowers while they’re alive to smell them\,” a sentiment reflected in the abundance of floral arrangements that adorn the space each year. The annual event brings people together to experience art and support artists in an inviting\, open-air setting. \nGuests can explore and collect original artwork and merch by 20+ visual artists\, watch live painting\, thrift shop\, and enjoy sounds curated by Brotha Taaj and DJ YNGFU\, accompanied by a live jazz band throughout the evening. \nThe experience also features soul food from Mr. D’s Homestyle Cooking\, sweet treats from Cloud Cups Gelato\, and a cash bar serving some delicious budget-friendly cocktails and drinks all night. \nMore than an art show\, Art Under the Stars has become an anticipated space to for artists\, art lovers\, and the community to connect\, dance\, and celebrate living artists\, creativity\, and life while we’re here to experience it together.

Do you want to try a new hobby but need inspiration and means? Let’s share materials that are in good condition! The Art Department and Special Collections invite you to come by the library with supplies that you no longer want or need and pick up something else in exchange. You do not need to bring materials to take something. \nJoin us at Parkway Central in the Heim Center room 131/132 from 1:00 – 3:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Please bring your own bag if you plan on taking things. \nPlease make sure that all items are in good\, usable condition.
