DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Future/Past/Present at InLiquid Gallery!\n@ InLiquid Gallery\, 1400 N American St\, Philadelphia PA\, 19122\nReception: July 9th\, 6p – 9p \nFeaturing artists: Randall Cleaver\, Billy Colbert\, Carolyn Harper\, Candace Karch\, James Labold\, Carole Loeffler\, Benjamin B. Olshin \nThis multi-media exhibition features seven InLiquid Artist Members making work about the United States’ past\, present\, and future. Using photos\, sculpture\, painting\, and other mediums\, these artists bring various cultural phenomena to coexist on a single plane. Through this exhibition\, we’re reminded that the American political landscape is intersectional and extends beyond our immediate line of sight\, our present. As we celebrate the United States’ 250th Anniversary\, we take this time to reflect on how we’ve evolved as a nation and who we might dream of becoming. \nEach artist examines the American political landscape through a different lens. As viewers move through the gallery\, they are placed in different states of time\, both factual and imagined. Portraits throughout the gallery depict individuals whose future has been stolen\, whose past has been forgotten\, and whose history is remembered—three very different outcomes of existence. Portraiture is employed as a means of preserving an identity and reshaping the historical footprint of the subjects they honor. \nSculptures throughout the space draw caricatures of political figures\, creating tongue-in-cheek compositions critiquing the lawmakers and the state legislature in the US. Mockery has been a long-standing tool of opposition to identify the downfalls of political figures\, typically seen in newspaper cartoons; these narratives shape the perceived effectiveness of government officials. \nBut what if the past looked different? Artifacts from alternate timelines\, items that could not possibly exist in our reality\, highlight the obvious: our actions will impact our future. As for the timeline we exist in\, there are moments in history that simply can’t be overlooked. The collection of work in the back of the gallery puts viewers face-to-face with the not often-seen lives of Black Americans from the 1800s to the 1950s. As we imagine how our future might be shaped\, we must remember what shaped our present.

Exhibition is upstairs in the Terrace Gallery. \nAugust 7 First Friday\n5-7 terrace reception\nRuns through August 30 (closing at 4) \nShawn Alleyne is a multi-disciplinary creator and visual artist based in Philadelphia\, originally from Barbados. His work pulls from many worlds\, mixing sci-fi\, mythology\, and Afro-aesthetics with his Caribbean roots\, love of hip-hop\, and self-taught techniques. The result is a bold and layered style rooted in speculative fiction and storytelling. \nBeyond his own creative work\, Shawn is deeply committed to growing the artistic community. He is the founder of Artmada\, an art collective that brings artists together\, and The Xion Network\, a comic book-focused networking group. He also co-founded Street Team Studios\, an entertainment company built on collaboration and creative expression. @pyroglyphics1 \nAnastasia Crisostomo-Dawan comes to Cherry Street Pier through her work with Diaspora DNA Story Center: more than an archive or museum; it’s a living space where stories come to life. \nAs a Licensed Real Estate Professional and PA Commissioned Notary Public\, Anastasia’s career has been grounded in acquisition strategy\, municipal processes\, investor collaboration\, and asset management. She has worked alongside local governments\, non-profits\, and private investors. These experiences have afforded her access to redevelopment opportunities and an understanding of how public policy\, capital\, and community interests intersect. Today Anastasia continues to maintain her cultivated relationships and actively work with clients across acquisitions\, project and property management\, sales and marketing\, and real estate consulting. @diasporadnactr \nJustin Duerr grew up in rural Pennsylvania. As a child he studied ancient Egyptian mythology and art\, oddities of pop-culture\, religion\, and anything odd he could find hiding in the woods or in the local library\, unsurprisingly influences that carried into his visual\, musical\, and genre crossing output.\n.\nIn the early 1990s\, Justin dropped out of high school and moved to Philadelphia\, PA. He spent several years living in various squats while continuing to refine his creative vision\, and also recording music and sound with hand held tape recorders. His work was shaped by experiences drawing large scale pieces by candlelight in an abandoned warehouse\, working in the Bering Sea on fishing boats\, and many musical performances and below-the-radar art events. He and his fascination with and research into the mysterious “Toynbee Tiles”\, which are embedded in the asphalt of streets across the country — were the subject of a documentary called “Resurrect Dead: the Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles\,” which received an award at the 2011 Sundance film festival for best director. Justin’s research and texts have led him to uncover art mysteries requiring trips to obscure settings and archives. Justin’s artwork has been exhibited internationally. @justinduerr \nBonnie MacAllister is a fourth year resident at Cherry Street Pier. Curator of the exhibition\, her previous shows at the pier have included Phantastic Phibers\, a large scale invitational multimedia fibers exhibition including interactive and industrial textiles and suspended puppetry spanning the length of the upstairs terrace\, pier gallery\, and the pier garden bridge view and Weaving on the Waterfront featuring looms\, process work\, an installation of woven estuary dolls depicting indigenous pre-colonial figures\, and an interactive wishing well and tree constructed by her frequent collaborator Jamie Campbell. \nBonnie’s Craft Your Own Nature Inspired Fabric Art was selected as an Airbnb Original. This workshop and a variety of fiber arts experiences including embroidery\, weaving\, sewing\, felting\, and creating keepsakes are available to book at Cherry Street Pier monthly through her instagram links @bonniemacart. She has published and exhibited internationally and has been the recipient of grants and teaching artist residencies including a Fulbright- Hays to Ethiopia. \nAthena Astraea Scott is an interdisciplinary artist from Philadelphia\, Pa. She holds a Bachelor of Science from The Art Institute of Philadelphia and MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with a career background in web and graphic design. \nAthena received a nomination for the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship and has been a Fellow of the Mural Arts Philadelphia Fellowship for Black Artists and The Dina Wind Foundation/InLiquid Fellowship programs. Athena has exhibited work in and around the Philadelphia area and has participated in the Artist in Residence program at Cherry St Pier\, in Philadelphia. She has also received the Linda Lee Alter award with the awarded work acquired for the Linda Lee Alter collection. @athena_astraea \nKeni Thomas also known as @Thomcat23\, is a Philadelphia-based visual artist whose work explores social\, political\, and environmental themes through bold imagery and visual humor. He began his career as a graphic designer in sports marketing\, working with organizations such as the Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Flyers. Since then\, he has collaborated with brands such as Nike/Sneaker-Lab and Moment Watches\, as well as fellow artists\, on a wide range of creative projects.His primary focus is the human experience and general geekery. Keni went independent in 2020 and helped establish Philly Otaku (an anime fan community) with his partner Becky DeMaulé. \nMichael N. Thomas is a painter\, designer\, and mixed-media artist hailing from New York City. Growing up in a multicultural household in Queens\, New York\, he began to use the city as his muse. The son of an Ecuadorian immigrant mother and an American free-spirited father\, he learned the importance of creating art at a young age. Now a father himself\, he speaks through each piece he creates. @tigerhorseart \nMichael’s use of color and line is both poetic and powerful. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s\, surrounded by the culture of New York City\, inspired his abstract and textured style. SUMMARY:Heard: Herd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Opening Reception of Heard: Herd\, an installation by Ian Butz (MFA ’25). Heard: Herd provides viewers an opportunity to experience being part of a bison herd and by doing so\, grasp the cultural importance of bison\, historically and today. Bison are tremendously beneficial to the environment and plains ecosystem. In addition to environmental benefits\, rehoming and re-establishing bison in the wild allows Native Americans to reclaim part of their spirituality and strength as Indigenous Nations. \nAcrylic on translucent PVC fabric with a transcendent\, multi-sided experience\, the Bison paintings were largely inspired by Ian’s personal travels to Montana\, Utah\, Wyoming\, and South Dakota in 2025. The installation showcases landscapes as a visual narrative tool\, evoking the atmospheric\, otherworldly nature of being out West as a traveler. \nIan would like to acknowledge the support from PAFA’s Fine Arts Venture Fund and the Murray Dessner Travel Award for providing funding for travel and materials for the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Piecing it Together Exhibition\, Meet The Maker
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of Philadelphia through art\, Piecing it Together explores two distinct areas of Philadelphia through assemblage. The Wissahickon Valley Park and Kensington District share a similar history: both are ancestral homes of the indigenous tribe\, the Lenni Lenape\, and both were part of the 18th- and 19th-century industrial boom\, with mills and manufacturing dominating. What sets them apart is how these areas fared after deindustrialization. \nThe Wissahickon Valley Park was acquired by the city to protect the city’s drinking water\, eventually transforming it into a protected\, forested natural landmark. While much of the industrial past was torn down\, remnants of the structures remain. Through Joseph Opshinsky’s detailed cut-paper collages\, he captures the trails along the valley\, the reclamation of nature\, and the scars of its industrial past. Beginning with traditional sketches\, Opshinsky’s use of vibrant papers brings the idyllic scenes of the Wissahickon trails to life. \nThe Kensington District\, once known as the “Workshop of the World”\, took a different path in the mid-20th century\, as manufacturing went overseas\, leading to job losses and suburban flight. The area was left with abandoned factories and scattered buildings. Through the rubble of his neighborhood\, Michael Morgan unearthed the shards that would become his Kensington Apotheosis series. Systematically digging up the alley behind his property\, which was the site of a dump from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries\, he found old ceramic pipes and dolls\, mostly fragments. Morgan gives these discarded\, broken\, long-forgotten\, buried ceramic pieces a new life inspired by the Japanese practice of kintsugi\, celebrating their broken past.

Prichett\, creator of this year’s large-scale participatory art project\, The Big Sloth.Many of you volunteered by helping to hand-string the disposable cutlery that became part of the installation. Now\, artist Pam Prichett will take you behind the scenes and share what has unfolded over the past ten months in her South Bronx studio\, offering insight into the creative process that brought The Big Sloth to life. \nArtwork by RISD alum and native New Yorker\, Pamela Prichett has been featured in The Provincetown Fine Arts Museum; Museum of the City of New York; and the i.d.e.a. Museum\, Mesa\, AZ. She has had solo shows of her paintings in New York City and Philadelphia. Her work has also appeared in publications including The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and Los Angeles Times. Her children’s book\, Downward Dog with Diego\, was published in 2016 by Blue Apple Books.
