SUMMARY:Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Philly Unwrapped\, come let your voice be heard about waste reduction and reuse in Philadelphia! \nPhiladelphia spends millions every year managing waste. Almost nothing prevents it. At the same time\, food and beverage businesses are required to purchase single-use packaging that increases operating costs and contributes to pollution that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities where waste is processed and incinerated. \nThere may be a better\, less wasteful way — and it saves money and protects public health. \nPhilly Unwrapped is bringing together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. \nWhat This Is\nJoin ECHO Systems\, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia\, Rethink Disposable’s Clean Water Fund and Trash Academy in this informative and engaging community event. \nLearn How to Use the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit — a free\, practical resource designed specifically for local food-sector businesses.\nCase studies show that businesses implementing reuse and waste prevention strategies save between $3\,000–$22\,000 annually\, while reducing trash volume\, improving operational efficiency\, and strengthening customer loyalty. Attendees will be able to join a funding consortium to demonstrate business need and interest in supporting a just transition toward reuse and waste prevention.\nThis event includes a community listening session. We want to hear directly from residents and business owners about concerns\, barriers\, and opportunities as we work to attract funding and build a just transition. \nWho Should Attend \nRestaurant\, café\, and food truck owners\nCaterers and event operators\nCorner store and grocery operators\nHospitality managers\nCommunity leaders and residents\nInstitutions and neighborhood organizations\nWe warmly invite City Council members\, local representatives\, community development corporations\, business improvement districts\, and neighborhood organizations to join this conversation. Advancing waste prevention presents an opportunity to strengthen fiscal stewardship\, support local businesses\, and protect public health — and we look forward to working together to explore what that can look like for Philadelphia. \nWhat You’ll Walk Away With\nClear\, implementable cost-saving strategies\nAccess to the free Philly-specific Toolkit\nEarly information about upcoming grant opportunities and how to participate in the funding consortium\nConnections to a growing network of local businesses and partners\nAn opportunity to help shape future funding and policy priorities\nThis is not a lecture. It’s a practical working session focused on real-world solutions. \nEvent Details \nLocation: PHMC — 4601 Market Street\, Philadelphia\, PA \nTransportation: Free onsite parking available at 47th & Haverford (see attached map) Also walking distance from the L \nTime: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM- arrive promptly \nOther Details: Light fare + coffee provided\nCost: Free — registration required\nFunding provided by EPA Region 3’s Thriving Communities – Green & Healthy Homes Initiative.\nWith support from the Story of stuff project and a generous match from Jeffery A Miller catering\nCoffee provided by High Point Cafe. \nShow less\nPHMC

SUMMARY:Author Talk | Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Thea Riofrancos will be in conversation with Malcolm Harris about Riofranco’s latest book\, Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism\, an in-depth analysis into the growing industry of green technologies and the environmental\, social\, and political consequences of the mining it requires. \nDrawing on groundbreaking fieldwork in Chile\, Nevada\, and Portugal\, Riofrancos explores the environmental and social costs of the global race to expand lithium mining amid supply chain concerns. With haunting descriptions of vulnerable ecosystems\, she examines how mining harms landscapes\, provokes protest\, takes center stage in national politics\, and links countries on the peripheries of the world economy to huge corporations\, commodity markets\, and powerful investors. While an unregulated mining boom could inflict irreversible harm\, Riofrancos offers compelling ideas about how to harmonize climate action with social justice. \nThea Riofrancos is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College\, a Strategic Co-Director of the Climate and Community Institute\, and a fellow at the Transnational Institute. \nMalcolm Harris is the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California\, Capitalism\, and the World. His latest book is What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required

SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

This will be followed by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4\, with pianist Jonathan Biss playing alongside the Fabulous Philadelphians. Following intermission\, we will be treated to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5\, one of his most famous symphonies with its iconic four-note motif that has been adapted in pop culture in everything from the Electric Light Orchestra to Fantasia 2000 to the Judge Judy theme music. \nTickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.com or the Mann Ticket Office.

SUMMARY:Philly’s Changemakers Take the Stage at MISSION Story Slam
DESCRIPTION:Think The Moth\, but with a mission. On Tuesday\, June 10 at 6 PM\, the city’s most passionate changemakers will take the mic at MISSION Story Slam\, a high-energy\, heartwarming storytelling competition designed to amplify the voices of those making a difference. Hosted by PWPVideo at National Mechanics in Old City\, the 12th edition of the biannual event is themed “The Time is Now”—and it promises stories that are bold\, honest\, and deeply human. In just five minutes each\, nonprofit leaders\, activists\, and local heroes—including First Person Arts Executive Director\, Jamie Brunson—will share true personal stories about overcoming obstacles and standing up for what matters. \nBut this isn’t just about storytelling: A panel of judges awards a $250 donation to the night’s top storyteller’s favorite nonprofit. The audience picks the Crowd Favorite\, who earns a $100 donation for a nonprofit of their choice. \nMore than just a mic and a spotlight\, MISSION Story Slam is a platform to be seen\, heard\, and celebrated. All stories are professionally recorded by PWPvideo and shared online to help storytellers extend their message far beyond the room.

SUMMARY:Girls' High Library Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The Girls’ High Library was once a vibrant hub of learning\, creativity\, and inspiration. However\, it has been closed since 2013. Its research materials still include World Book Encyclopedias and a physical card catalog. There is no access to digital books\, electronic research materials\, periodicals\, and other critical technological resources to ensure that our students can excel and compete academically. Despite our school’s successes and strengths\, our students cannot effectively engage with their present education and prepare for life after graduation without a library and a technologically accessible resource center. \nThis fundraiser aims to restore the library to its former glory while incorporating modern resources to empower current and future students. We aim to provide a state-of-the-art library and resource center staffed with librarians so Girls’ High girls can thrive. And now\, there are three ways you can support\, including our Library Fundraiser planned for Sunday\, May 18th.

SUMMARY:Grid Presents: The People Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Public Trust for The People Left Behind\, a conversation on Tuesday\, May 6\, 2025 from 7-8:30pm about the long-term effects of gun violence on local communities beyond the crime scene. The launch event for a new Grid magazine podcast\, the program will be hosted by Afea Tucker and features panelists Vivek Ashok\, Ellie Rushing\, Julien Suaudeau\, and others. Presented in partnership with Grid. \nAbout the Program\nWhy does gun violence reporting in local and national media typically center on the crime scene and the judicial process? How can we break the never-ending loop of the news cycle\, from one shooting to the next? How can we remove the stigma of victimhood and involve local actors (loved ones\, neighbors\, neighborhood associations) in the streamlining of gun violence coverage? Can news outlets shift from emergency reporting about shootings to long form journalism about their personal implications? What kind of storytelling and journalistic standards should we advocate to maximize the agency of survivors and co-victims? What needs to be done to mitigate the risks of exploitation and retraumatization? To what extent is sharing one’s story with the world part of a healing process? \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Vivek Ashok is an Associate of the Center for Violence Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, and a fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Penn Medicine. His research focuses on the language surrounding firearm related violence\, and disentangling firearm violence from mental illness. \nEllie Rushing is the Justice and Injustice Reporter at the The Philadelphia Inquirer. She covers criminal justice and law enforcement in Philadelphia\, including how crime and the court systems impact communities. \nJulien Suaudeau is a writer and filmmaker. He hosts two Philadelphia-centric podcasts: Song of Philadelphia and The People Left Behind. He teaches French and Film at Bryn Mawr College\, where he is the director of the Film Studies program. \nAfea Tucker is The Trace’s Philadelphia Community Engagement Reporter. She oversees Up the Block\, a resource and information hub for Philadelphians affected by gun violence. A veteran media professional and journalist\, her work has been published in The Philadelphia Tribune\, WHYY\, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. \nTerrez McCleary founded Moms Bonded By Grief. In November 2024\, the organization opened the Moms Bonded By Grief Botanical Garden of Healing\, a space built by mothers of homicide victims to honor Philadelphians lost to gun violence. The memorial garden sits at the corner of 51st Street and Woodland Avenue. \nMichelle Kerr-Spry is a Trauma-Informed Specialist and Behavioral Health Generalist\, as well as the Director of Programs and Development for Mothers In Charge (MIC). She joined MIC in 2006\, shortly after the murders of her only brother\, James\, and then oldest son\, Blain\, and has worked there in various capacities for the last 19 years.

SUMMARY:Bike Advocacy Training - League of American Bicyclists
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe League of American Bicyclists’ mission is to build a Bicycle Friendly America for Everyone\, improving lives and strengthening communities through bicycling. Our successes to date are thanks in part to the growing bike movement\, a network of changemakers leading at the national\, state\, and local levels. \nTo achieve even more wins for better biking that benefit everyone\, we must continue to grow this movement by empowering more people to be capable\, confident leaders and advocates in their communities. \nIn support of this goal\, the League is thrilled to announce that we have launched a new workshop for people to become certified as a League Cycling Advocate (LCA). Our next LCA workshop will take place July 24-26\, 2024 in Philadelphia\, PA. You can find a recap of our first LCA workshop\, which took place in March 2024 in Washington\, DC\, on the League blog here. \nWho Should Attend? \nThese advocacy workshops are open to anyone\, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. The workshop is geared toward emerging leaders\, advocates newly entering the bike movement\, and anyone else interested in gaining League certification as a bike advocate. \nWorkshop Content & Format \nThe workshop will be in-person and conducted over three days. The first day consists of an evening happy hour and group ride\, the second day includes a full day of training\, group ride\, and happy hour and the third day wraps up with a half day of training. \nThe workshop will cover advocacy basics such as the history of bike advocacy\, how to get organized\, effective political engagement\, making the case\, coalition building\, policy basics\, funding\, storytelling\, equity and mobility justice\, and more. \nThe content of the workshop will involve group work\, happy hours\, bike rides\, as well as individual self-guided readings which will be given to all participants ahead of the workshop. \nBy the end of the workshop and accompanying readings\, you will be equipped with the tools and training to implement the ideas\, strategies\, and practical applications in your communities that build the bike movement at the local level. \nLocal Host \nThe League is grateful to our local hosts for the July 2024 workshop\, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP). Through advocacy and education\, BCGP leads the movement to make every bicycle ride safe\, to empower youth and adults to ride\, and to foster a ridership that reflects the diversity of the Philadelphia region. They are helping us make this event successful by connecting us with local advocates\, guest speakers\, group rides\, bike joy\, and sharing lessons learned from their years of hard work. Consider supporting BCGP in that work by making a donation. \nCost \nThe cost of the workshop is $100 which includes one day of lunch and two days of snacks\, as well as the certification\, and all materials associated with the workshop. All other meals (breakfast\, dinners\, and both happy hours)\, and all travel and lodging will be at the expense of the attendee. There will be a limited number of partial scholarships available. SUMMARY:SPEAK UP for Parking-Protected Bike Lanes
DESCRIPTION:SPEAK UP for Parking-Protected Bike Lanes\n\nWhat do we want? Parking-protected bike lanes!\nWhen do want them? NOW!\n\nJoin the Bicycle Coalition and Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia as we head back to Harrisburg on Tuesday\, June 4th to talk to elected officials about the benefits of Parking Protected Bike Lanes and why it’s urgent they be legalized across the commonwealth.\nCurrently\, PennDOT does not allow for the installation of parking-separated bike lanes on state-owned roads. Amending state legislation is an issue that the Bicycle Coalition\, the City of Philadelphia\, and our partners have been working on since the 2017-2018 legislative session. As an interim solution\, PennDOT has permitted a pilot program to demonstrate protected bike lanes on selected state roads in Philadelphia. An interim solution is not enough — we need this program to be made permanent.\nJoin us in calling on our state legislators to save lives by passing HB1283.\nAdditional information & sign-up available here.\nIf you can’t attend on June 4th\, you can still SPEAK UP — send a letter to your state legislators using our easy template: bit.ly/yes2ppbl
