SUMMARY:Safe Streets Statewide Advocacy Call
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \n\n\nJoin Bicycle Coalition Policy Director Julio Rodriguez on April 30th for a virtual call about Parking Protected Bike Lanes (PPB)\, Jay Alert Pilot\, Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)\, and our upcoming advocacy day in Harrisburg\, PA\, June 9\, 2026. A link to the Zoom Meeting will be provided with your registration email. \nThere are only 15 Parking Protected Bike Lanes in Philadelphia as a result of a pilot BCGP advocated for with OTIS and PennDOT in 2017. Passing the PPB would give municipalities in Pennsylvania the ability to install PPB\, which would result in more Parking Protected Bike Lanes. \nThe Jay Alert Pilot would create a notification system in Philadelphia where autobody shops would receive details of vehicles involved in a hit and run. In 2026\, 29 people have lost their lives to traffic violence\, four of which were hit and runs. \nSpeed kills: One of Ten People survive if they are hit at 40mph\, whereas nine of ten people survive if they’re hit at 20mph. The Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) program would offer an alternative for drivers facing license suspension for excessive driving by installing a device limiting speed on their vehicle in lieu of driver suspension. Here is a video of how this policy is working in Virgina.

SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Philly Unwrapped\, come let your voice be heard about waste reduction and reuse in Philadelphia! \nPhiladelphia spends millions every year managing waste. Almost nothing prevents it. At the same time\, food and beverage businesses are required to purchase single-use packaging that increases operating costs and contributes to pollution that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities where waste is processed and incinerated. \nThere may be a better\, less wasteful way — and it saves money and protects public health. \nPhilly Unwrapped is bringing together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. \nWhat This Is\nJoin ECHO Systems\, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia\, Rethink Disposable’s Clean Water Fund and Trash Academy in this informative and engaging community event. \nLearn How to Use the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit — a free\, practical resource designed specifically for local food-sector businesses.\nCase studies show that businesses implementing reuse and waste prevention strategies save between $3\,000–$22\,000 annually\, while reducing trash volume\, improving operational efficiency\, and strengthening customer loyalty. Attendees will be able to join a funding consortium to demonstrate business need and interest in supporting a just transition toward reuse and waste prevention.\nThis event includes a community listening session. We want to hear directly from residents and business owners about concerns\, barriers\, and opportunities as we work to attract funding and build a just transition. \nWho Should Attend \nRestaurant\, café\, and food truck owners\nCaterers and event operators\nCorner store and grocery operators\nHospitality managers\nCommunity leaders and residents\nInstitutions and neighborhood organizations\nWe warmly invite City Council members\, local representatives\, community development corporations\, business improvement districts\, and neighborhood organizations to join this conversation. SUMMARY:Author Talk | Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Thea Riofrancos will be in conversation with Malcolm Harris about Riofranco’s latest book\, Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism\, an in-depth analysis into the growing industry of green technologies and the environmental\, social\, and political consequences of the mining it requires. \nDrawing on groundbreaking fieldwork in Chile\, Nevada\, and Portugal\, Riofrancos explores the environmental and social costs of the global race to expand lithium mining amid supply chain concerns. With haunting descriptions of vulnerable ecosystems\, she examines how mining harms landscapes\, provokes protest\, takes center stage in national politics\, and links countries on the peripheries of the world economy to huge corporations\, commodity markets\, and powerful investors. While an unregulated mining boom could inflict irreversible harm\, Riofrancos offers compelling ideas about how to harmonize climate action with social justice. \nThea Riofrancos is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College\, a Strategic Co-Director of the Climate and Community Institute\, and a fellow at the Transnational Institute. \nMalcolm Harris is the author of the national bestseller Palo Alto: A History of California\, Capitalism\, and the World. His latest book is What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required

SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: Earth's Greatest Enemy
DESCRIPTION:Join Abby Martin for the Philadelphia premiere of her new documentary film on the environmental impact of the US military! \nEarth’s Greatest Enemy is the second documentary from journalist Abby Martin that uncovers a shocking blind spot in the climate conversation: the U.S. military. \nExempt from international climate agreements and rarely scrutinized in mainstream reporting\, the Pentagon is revealed here as the world’s single largest institutional polluter—spewing carbon\, contaminating water\, and scarring landscapes across the globe. Combining investigative journalism\, striking visuals\, and stories from impacted communities\, the film challenges audiences to rethink the hidden costs of a global military empire and its planetary consequences. Provocative\, urgent\, and eye-opening\, this is a documentary that will change how you see both the military and environmentalism. \nFeaturing Q&A with Abby Martin following the film. \nLearn more about the film go to EarthsGreatestEnemy.com \nBy Car or By Train \nThe East Falls Train Station is a short walk from the Fallser Club. Parking in East Falls is no problem! There is ample free on-street parking near the East Falls train station driveway at 3610 Midvale Ave and a paid municipal lot three blocks away at 4100 Ridge Ave.  Midvale Ave and Ridge Ave are both well-lit!

SUMMARY:The Land Alchemists - Elevated Stage Reading & Ritual
DESCRIPTION:The Land Alchemists follows Sunny\, a Black genderqueer farm manager who was laid off for their teach-in on Palestine and the Congo. They return to a childhood home where they hope to heal and figure out what’s next. They have the unconventional guidance from Shadow\, Spirit\, embodied aspects of Sunny\, as well as revolutionary ancestors like Patrice Lumumba\, Mahmoud Darwish\, and Katherine Dunham. Most importantly\, they have YOU\, the audience. You are casted as “The Light Orbs” to Sunny. Together\, through rituals of stillness and dance\, rest and release\, and even a foot soak\, you journey with Sunny through several portals to refuel our collective spirit for political resistance. \nThis is a fundraiser where all proceeds will be split between the Panzi Foundation of the Congo\, and Camp Breakers of Gaza\, Palestine. \nSince we will be in ritual together\, including a foot soak ceremony you are encouraged to wear white/light colored clothing\, wear comfortable attire\, and be prepared to remove your shoes.

SUMMARY:The Historical Society of Pennsylvania Presents: Black Music as History with Dyana Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join legendary radio host\, journalist\, and cultural advocate Dyana Williams for a conversation on the power of Black music as a vessel for history\, memory\, and identity. As a cofounder of Black Music Month and a tireless champion for artists’ rights and cultural preservation\, Williams brings a unique perspective to the intersection of music and activism. She will trace the origins of Black Music Month\, highlight the role of music in preserving African American stories across generations\, and reflect on the responsibility and urgency of archiving these cultural expressions. This program will explore how music not only entertains but also bears witness—amplifying resistance\, joy\, and community across time. \nThis event is offered in a hybrid format\, with both onsite and virtual tickets available. All ticket reservations will include a Zoom link\, but only onsite tickets will be honored at the door. \nOnsite tickets include admission to the talk and the exhibit Voices of the Community: Local Black Preservation. Doors open at 6 p.m. to allow viewing of the exhibit. \nComplimentary tickets will be offered to current secondary\, undergraduate\, and graduate students. Please email us at programs@hsp.org and tell us where you are enrolled and in what program.
