By Train to the 1654 Morton Homestead and the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge

Did you know you can reach both ends of the Heinz Wildlife Refuge by train? Join Bob Thomas, Chair of the Philadelphia Historical Commission, on a walk to the 1654 Morton Homestead along Darby Creek and through the adjacent wildlife refuge. Our tour begins with coffee and snacks at 30th Street Station, then a train ride to Prospect Park where we begin our walk past several fascinating and beautiful historic sites, and then enter the Heinz Refuge. We’ll enjoy several miles of trails along waterways and a lagoon where we can expect to see many birds, picnicking along the way. Our return will be via the Eastwick station and a short train ride back to 30th Street.

Meeting place: at 9am at 30th Street Station for coffee and pastries. After people get their coffee, we will be we’ll be sitting at the tables in the center of the South East Concourse (8) where it meets the Arcade (10). (See attached map of 30th Street Station.)

Terrain and Difficulty: park trails, gravel roads and sidewalks. Distance 6 miles with many stops to view both historic and natural sites. Rated moderate. Wear good walking shoes or boots, and bring binoculars and water, snacks and a picnic lunch to eat in the Refuge along the way. Pre-registration required.

Fee: There is no charge, but as suggested contribution of $25 will be much appreciated.

Transportation will be by SEPTA trains: Our train leaves 30th Street Station at 9.39, but originates in Norristown at 8.41am, stopping at Conshohocken, Manayunk, East Falls, Temple University, and other intermediate stations on its way 30th Street. You may join the walk also at the Prospect Park Train Station when the 9:56 train arrives.
