If you’ve ever walked along the east bank of the Schuylkill River in Center City and wondered what trees you were looking at, you’re in luck. The Schuylkill River Park is now officially a Level 1 arboretum. As part of the programming to go along with the park’s new status, the Friends of Schuylkill River Park will be putting brass tags with QR codes on the park’s trees to help users learn more about the 50+ species growing there.
The friends group will also begin a tree succession planning process so that, as trees age and die, newer specimens can be planted to fill in the park’s canopy. A sensory garden is coming, too, and you can vote through the end of October on what trees you’d like to see in it.
