The Circuit offers a map of bike trails throughout the Philadelphia region. | Image via connectthecircuit.orgImagine stepping out your door and no matter which direction you point your bike, there’s a bike path just a few minutes from your house. This dream is gradually becoming a reality thanks to the work of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and its partners.

Last week, the Coalition announced, in association with the City of Philadelphia and the William Penn Foundation, a new name and website for the city’s regional trail network. “The Circuit,” a user-friendly online map, integrates government-funded, nonprofit and privately owned bike trails of Philadelphia and its surrounding counties in an easy-to-use, interactive format.

The new website has a trip-planning feature as well as the ability to browse coalition-recommended trails by county and popularity. And getting friends involved is even easier, thanks to the site’s social media options for trip-sharing on Facebook and Twitter There’s also a calendar with the Coalition’s upcoming events and the “Crossing Paths Blog”, where visitors can find biking community news and take direct action by signing a petition for safe biking or joining the Bike Coalition.

The Circuit was developed as a way to connect people and places, facilitate transportation and spur economic growth, as well as support the plan to expand this regional trail network. The William Penn Foundation is helping lead this initiative with a $10.5 million grant exclusively for the planning and development of Circuit trails. The grant will help extend of the Boardwalk to South Street, refurbish the Walnut Street Gateway, and maintain the Manayunk Bridge Trail.

With so many great biking options now at your fingertips, it’s time to put down the car keys and hit the road on two wheels!
